1927 Yearbook

Editorial - June 1927

"A high school education includes more than just what one can gain from the various books that a student is required to read. The friendships that one makes during his four-year voyage through the school often last a lifetime. They make it possible for a less fortunate student to succeed as a result of the aid that one of his more fortunate classmates gave him. Another important feature of school life is the extra-curricular activities: dramatics, athletics, orchestra, and publications. Formerly, a person who went to school studied the three R's and left; now, it is almost impossible for the average student to graduate without taking part in at least one of these extra activities that are so beneficial to him.

For years, Madison High School has been making rapid progress in this line. Four years ago, our first football team came into existence, and since then, our athletic progress has been rapid. The high school has not only won fame on the field of battle but also on the stage in dramatics and in debating.

With the publication of this volume, we are about to add another extracurricular activity to our list. This practice has grown from something that was thought to be an undertaking for colleges only, until it is a practice in use in almost every high school in the country.

This edition of the "Alembic" is the first year book of the Madison High School, and it aspires to take its place with the publications of other high schools.”
