Resources alone are not enough. We need to educate our parents, because each school has a culture, a unique way to do things. Many schools make the mistake to assume that parents just know ( email, website, friday folders, etc). for a new parent everything needs to be explicitly taught.
When a child starts ESL program/school:
1. Classroom buddy and host family
2. Get student and family involved in at least one activity. (PTO, sports, music, art, science fair, mural etc)
3. Playdate program: a. Ask families if they want to participate (check principal to add a line about school responsibility)
b. Ask teacher
c. sent letters.
d. can response emails
The ESL teacher helps to set up the first playdate, after that the parents should schedule one on their own.
4. Translate and send reminders of special events. (first year)
5. Promote families in a positive way. Good Gosip (language, culture, achievements, etc)
6. Join the school's P.D committee put your needs on the table.
