It is essential that elementary students master basic facts. Basic facts include operations with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Fact fluency means that a child can give a quick response (in about 3 seconds). Our goal should be that students can use a method to allow them to get the right answer, to do so reasonably fast, and be able to do this repeatedly (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2007). The research on basic fact fluency has shown that students' ability to learn higher levels of mathematics is directly related to their ability to perform basic math processes, such as basic facts (Hasselbring, Goin, & Bransford, 1988). Students must have a conceptual understanding of basic facts through the use of strategies, exploration, and experience with operations in order to learn these basic facts.
Grade Level Basic Facts expectations are:
1st Grade: Addition and Subtraction through 10
2nd Grade: Addition and Subtraction through 20.
3rd Grade: Multiplication and Division through the 9 tables
