I have the extreme pleasure and opportunity to teach 7th grade science at Spring Harbor Middle School. 7th graders at Spring Harbor are able to continue the school's excellent tradition of monitoring the health of local ecological sites such as Lake Mendota, Kettle Pond, Black Earth Creek and Pheasant Branch. Our students also take part in extensive restoration projects, including the removal of invasive species at the School Forest and Prairie and the design and construction of on-site rain gardens. The two rain gardens we have built will be used throughout the year as living laboratories, to monitor the effects of run-off on the lake. I also lead the school's Field Biology Club, where students can study science in much greater depth, go on overnight camping trips and get a chance to use equipment they may not use in class. I mentor students in independent research projects and enjoy working with kids to solve complex problems through experimentation. We will also be expanding our gardening program significantly this year with the utilization of our school's Sustainable Greenhouse.
Course Information:
Throughout the year, students in 7th grade will participate in a number of activities where they will conduct real research, collect data and share their findings with our community. To provide students and their families with background information about each of those units, I have prepared the following pages with links to useful resources, readings, science games, videos and some of the assignments we will be conducting throughout the year. I'll continue to update this page throughout the year, so please check back occasionally. You will also be able to find printable copies of many of the assignments we conduct in class.
