Identification: using varied assessments and tools
Assessments for elementary:
Previously we relied heavily on MAP scores, TRLs, and CogAT.
In 2021-22, we relied on Bridges Interim Assessments and Fastbridge.
For this year (2022-23), we gave the NNAT3 (Naglieri Nonverbal Test) to all MMSD second graders. All students should also be taking the Bridges Interim Assessments and Fastbridge reading assessments. Some schools also implemented a Fastbridge math assessment for all students. The district is considering making it mandatory for all elementary students next school year.

TOPS (Teacher Observation of Potential in Students)
Other:
Dreambox, Lexia, SmartyAnts, Achieve3000 (2021-22). Most of these tools were discontinued this year (2022-23).
2e students (twice exceptional):
Having special education needs does not disqualify a student from also needing advanced learning services. Many students are in need of multiple supports.
Asynchronous development:
Elementary students often develop asynchronously: more quickly in some areas than others. A student may need both advanced learning support in a subject area while also needing substantial support with social-emotional learning, executive skills, or friendship development.
English Learners:
And, of course, students who are multilingual may show their need for advanced learning support in different ways than monolingual students.
