About Mac.Rob.

Welcome to Mac.Rob, a selective entry high school for students in Years 9-12.

Established in 1934, Mac.Rob plays a vital and inclusive role as one of the four selective entry schools in Victoria by ensuring a sense of connection, belonging, and challenge for like-minded, high-achieving students.

Located on Boon Wurrung country in the leafy heart of Naarm (Melbourne), Mac.Rob is one of Victoria’s four selective entry high schools, and one of the top-scoring public schools in the state. Students at selective entry high schools are driven, self-motivated, and high achievers in maths and sciences, visual and performing arts, physical education, and humanities subjects. The role of a selective entry school is to ensure a sense of connection, belonging, and challenge for like-minded, high-ability students.

As a selective entry school, the Mac.Robertson Girls' High School is not zoned; we accept students from all across Victoria, provided they have successfully applied for and completed the Selective Entry Examination. This examination is held in the year preceding enrolment - i.e. for students enrolling in 2024, they will sit an entrance exam in 2023.

All Australian or New Zealand citizens, or students who hold a visa or ImmiCard, may apply for a place at Mac.Rob. Fee-paying international students enrolled in Victorian schools are not eligible to apply. Mac.Rob does not maintain a waitlist, and cannot enrol students to secure visa or immigration status.

Mac.Rob is a school for senior students in Years 9-12; we do not accept students in Years 7 or 8, or in their final year of VCE study. Our students typically attend another high school of their choosing for these junior years, before applying for and transitioning to Mac.Rob at Year 9, 10, or 11.

Prayer room.

Mac.Rob is a diverse and inclusive school. We are committed to supporting staff and students from a diverse range of faiths with a prayer room.

The prayer room at Mac.Rob can be found on the Level 3 of the Kings way building, near K301 classroom.

The space is a room for quiet reflection, meditation and prayer only. Students and staff are able to access this space during the school day until 3.30pm. Food and drink cannot be consumed in this space. This is not a space for communal meetings of staff or students.

Acknowledgement of country.

"We acknowledge and pay our respects to the traditional custodians of the lands on which Mac.Rob was founded, the lands on which we work, teach, and learn. This is the land of the Bunurong people, and we pay our respects to indigenous elders past, present and emerging, and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded. We acknowledge the deep feelings of attachment and relationship of Aboriginal people to country and commit to building better relationships and greater understanding between our community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders."

We encourage our staff and students to use this acknowledgement of country at events, activities, or meetings.

Inclusion statement.

"Diversity is a core strength of Mac.Rob. Together, we cultivate a compassionate, growth-oriented environment that celebrates all identities. We prioritise equity and safety for all people in our community, and this is reflected in our mindsets and behaviours."

School values, vision, and mission.

At Mac.Rob, we value the steps along the way. Our school inspires active engagement in a breadth of experiences and encourages collaboration; our students understand that we learn best when we collaborate with others, and that achievement is most rewarding when it is shared. We trust in the capacity of our young people to make meaningful contributions to the school - through collaboration with staff in learning and decision making, and through expansive leadership, co-curricular and social service opportunities at Mac.Rob.

Our four school values are:

Our aim is to develop curious, motivated, and critical thinkers who show compassion for others, pursue personal growth, demonstrate respect for their community, and explore disciplines and opportunities they are truly passionate about.

Motto: Potens Sui - Mastery of Self.

Mission: As an inclusive and globally-minded school, Mac.Rob’s mission is to provide an enriching environment for highly able students - one where there is belonging, collaboration, and continuous growth.

Vision: Honouring diversity, inspiring curiosity and creativity. Transforming lives.

History of your school.

The Mac.Robertson Girls' High School traces its origin to the first Victorian State Secondary School - the Melbourne Continuation School - which opened in Spring Street in 1905.

The Melbourne Continuation School allowed young people to continue their education beyond Year 8. It was originally a  co-education school until a new school for the male students was opened at Forrest Hill in 1927. This was the beginning of Melbourne High School. The girls remained in the original Spring Street building, which was renamed as Melbourne Girls' High School. When this building was condemned in 1930, the students were moved to Government House at Ripponlea, until they moved again, in 1933, to State School No.1689 in King Street.

In 1934, Sir MacPherson Robertson, a philanthropist, entrepreneur, and inventor of the Freddo Frog and Cherry Ripe, made a gift of £100,000 pounds in honour of Victoria’s centenary, £40,000 pounds of which was to be spent providing a new girls' high school. The present building, designed by architect Norman Seabrook, was officially opened as The Mac.Robertson Girls' High School on November 7th, 1934.

More recent funding in the 1980s enabled Mac.Rob to expand, adding two further buildings which accommodate the Learning Resource Centre; dedicated Music, Visual Arts and Theatre learning areas; Information Technology and a well equipped Gymnasium.

In 1987, the school’s striking main building was deemed worthy of conserving and protecting for future generations, and given a National Trust Classification.

In 2022, a renovation of the Lakeside Building was undertaken to provide the school’s 1150 students with a state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centre, dynamic new classroom spaces, and integrated outdoor performance and recreation areas. This renovation is due to open in readiness for the 2023 school year.

The Mac.Rob experience.

Mac.Rob is a unique educational experience that offers our high-achieving students a wide range of opportunities, extra-curricular programs, and extension activities to challenge and engage them. As a Mac.Rob community member, we encourage you to get involved in these programs, and contribute to our vibrant community through participation in a school-wide Carnival or sporting event, House programs, musical or theatrical performances, and lunchtime activities.

Swimming Carnival

The annual House Swimming Carnival is the first major whole-school event of the year, and an opportunity for students and staff to contribute to the school's vibrant House culture.

Year 9 Camp

Year 9 camp is a chance for students to step outside their comfort zone and experience what being a Mac.Rob student is all about! Just one of our great events you can get involved in.

Mac.Rob's School Values

In 2021, Mac.Rob launched our new school values - community, growth, responsibility, and compassion. Hear what these mean to our students and staff!

School Song & Lyrics

Latin School Song

Music: Dr A. E. Floyd

Words: Mr W. Kerry, M.A

His veteribus sub tectis;
Carmen vocibus sescentis
Celebrate viginum
Mistos lusibus labores,
Strenuos dies, lucernas,
Haud ingratum otium.

[Chorus] Operosa, fructuosa,
Vita debet exigi.
Neu praeceptum
Sit infectum
Palladis, potens sui.

Quid si, per iocos et risum,

Occupare dona visum

Juventutis aurea.

Num quid setius explemus

Munus debitum, videmus

Quae subsint certamina

English Translation:

In these halls where youth rejoices

Let the sound of many voices

Tell in song our daily round;

Exercise, steady learning,

Active days, and lights late burning,

Leisure hours when joys abound

[Chorus] Firm in striving, fine in action

Such our life should ever be;

Nor unheeded go the precept

Pallas gives: “potens sui”

Wat if, ‘mid the fun and laughter,

We may seem to follow after

But youth’s golden gifts so fair;

What if we fulfil but slowly

Tasks that must be done; yet wholly

We perceive the challenge there

Vale

Words: Joan Bennet.

Music: George Findlay

Vale

Farewell old school

Farewell dear years of life within your halls

Fair years of laughter, toil and tears

To me a new voice calls

Others more great shall cry your name to me triumphantly

I have no gifts to crown your fame, save love and loyalty

Fro mightier hands than mine shall write your odyssey of glory

And loftier thoughts than mine shall light the pages of your story

And sweeter tongues than mine shall sing in more melodious lays ?? I thought it was “ways”

That down the winds of time shall sing the echoes of your praise

For me your hands have helped to mould the hopes and dreams of youth

All that my life shall ever hold of Beauty Honour Truth, I owe to you

And now we part but should I rise or fall

I only know that in my heart

Always your voice will call

The Welcome Song

Music & Words: Charindya Janakantha

You just don't know who you are yet,

But we'll help you master yourself,

Let's burn the bridges of doubt and fear,

Setting our goals as high as we can fly.

We aim for the stars,

Conquering all in our path,

And together we can reach our dreams,

We’re Mac.Rob, we'll stand strong,

And we'll make a change.

We are the messengers of music,

The music fills our souls it takes over control,

The music fills up the silent halls,

And as Mac.Robbians we sing in harmony.

Together we achieve as a team,

A team with solid bonds we storm out and defeat,

Another trophy of pride and strength,

With every step a sense of completion.

We aim for the stars,

Conquering all in our path,

And together we can reach our dreams,

We’re Mac.Rob, we'll stand strong,

And we'll make a change.

Keeping true to all of our values,

Gifted with talented minds we always succeed,

To our destinies our teachers guide,

Stronger than ever we meet as seas arise.

We aim for the stars,

Conquering all in our path,

And together we can reach our dreams,

We’re Mac.Rob, we'll stand strong,

And we'll make a change.
