Yoga in my Life. I became a yoga student in 1984, in San Francisco. In my ten years living there, I took classes in kundalini and Iyengar yoga, not understanding the different lineages but appreciating the depth and skill of my teachers. I began to integrate what I was learning into acting classes I was teaching as a graduate student. When I moved to Minnesota in 1993, I was bereft at leaving my yoga classes behind; readily, I found a superb teacher in St. Paul, in the Himalayan tradition. When she moved several years later, I found a teacher in the viniyoga tradition -- in viniyoga, I found my yoga home.

I went to training at the American Viniyoga Institute and began teaching in St. Paul in 2002. I've never stopped. In addition to teaching in viniyoga studios, I've enjoyed teaching college students, elders, writers, refugee women, and girls in a summer program. Viniyoga's main tenet is adaptation -- and I embrace it wholeheartedly. A yoga practice has to work for you, has to support your body, spirit and mind.
I study regularly with Robin Rothenberg, an innovative viniyoga teacher based in Seattle.

During the pandemic, I began teaching a class online. I'm still doing it, on Saturday mornings. Also during the pandemic, I and 4 other local teachers in the viniyoga tradition opened a new studio, "The Breathing Place." It's a lovely little sanctuary, thanks to Olivet Congregational Church in the Merriam-Park neighborhood of St. Paul.
Please see below for information on my two ongoing weekly classes. Payment is by donation. If you're interested in attending a class, please contact me first: bethclearyawake@gmail.com
Saturdays, 10-11 a.m.
on ZOOM
Experience with yoga, if not viniyoga, is suggested. I do break down postures and encourage adaptation and self-listening, but it's not really a teaching situation where you will get 1:1 attention (limitations of online). Feel free to contact me about this.🌿
Sundays, 4 - 5:15 p.m.
In person
The Breathing Place, Olivet Congregational Church
This is an ongoing class in the viniyoga tradition. No prior experience is required. If, after attending, you have questions about how we practice, it would be good to set up a private session with me so you can learn the principles of practice in viniyoga. 🌿
🌿In Addition: I enjoy teaching yoga as support and synergy with the Work That Reconnects. I have offered two 2-day "Yoga & Active Hope" workshops, and I am planning a multi-week exploration of yoga philosophy, viniyoga practice and the Work That Reconnects in winter, 2026. While this multi-week workshop -- "Winter Sowing" -- is in development, you can find a preliminary description on the "Beth's WTR Workshops" dropdown under Work That Reconnects.
