PSHE forms part of every learner’s statutory education provision. We recognise that regardless of starting point the PSHE curriculum provides essential life-long learning and helps learners build important life skills to prepare them for adulthood. PSHE learning is designed to give pupils experiences and skills that support their self-advocacy, developing independence, understanding of their bodies and emotions. Importantly, PSHE is about supporting all learners to be active members of any community they become part of.
At Mabel Prichard our PSHE curriculum is informed by the Equals principles and the content of the PSHE Education Planning Framework for Pupils with SEND which is aligned with the statutory guidance for PSHE from the DfE. The DfE recognises that schools are free to determine how to deliver the content of the PSHE curriculum thereby allowing us to be flexible for the unique needs of our learners, and to teach them in the most appropriate way possible within our pathways and inclusive frameworks approach.
PSHE teaching is integrated into all aspects of the curriculum ensuring that learners have access to relevant learning when it is most relevant to them and can be taught in context. All learners also have, as part of their timetable, discreet PSHE sessions, a minimum of once a week.
The curriculum focuses on the positive and ‘what should be (e.g.what should a healthy relationship look like? What are our responsibilities?)as opposed to the ‘what should not be’ to avoid confusion when teaching in abstract contexts.
In discreet sessions all learners across the school explore a set area of study. The topics within this area of study reflects the ability and stage of development of the learners.
Each topic is assessed by the inclusive framework for PSHE which is based on the learning outcomes provided by the PSHE Education Planning Framework for Pupils with SEND.
Learners consolidate knowledge through a cyclical approach to learning
As a result of the sequential approach, learners are supported to develop the foundation skills they need to be safe, happy and healthy.
Learners develop key communication skills, vocabulary, strategies and the confidence to help manage their life experiences
