COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND PROGRAM COORDINATOR

The Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery (MAAHMG) is looking for a dedicated individual with excellent organization and planning skills to join our team. This position is responsible for the operation of MAAHMG’s community outreach and programming.

This is a part-time position (20 hours per week). Schedule is Tuesday through Saturday to be performed during museum operation hours. Schedule is flexible. This position reports directly to the Operations Manager. This is a 12-month, grant funded position which has the potential for permanent status if additional funding becomes available. Salary is $20,000.

Responsibilities:

The general responsibilities of the position are to create companion programming that coordinates with MAAHMG’s exhibitions, and develop community outreach and public events. Specific tasks include but are not limited to the following:


Develop and present public programming that pertains to the history, art and culture of African Americans in Minnesota that engage with the community. Develop programs that are related to or connect with MAAHMG’s exhibitions. Evaluate MAAHMG programs and prepare reports. Assist the Operations Manager with pre-K-12 school tours and other group tours. Create and implement events, panel discussions, and community conversations at the museum and virtually. Serve as coordinator for the Children’s Reading Circle which includes recruiting and scheduling guest authors and readers, selecting books for the museum’s collection, promotion, marketing and increasing participation. Coordinate and arrange for MAAHMG’s participation in community events sponsored by other cultural institutions and organizations. Promote and maintain partnerships through networking and developing shared programming opportunities with other museums, cultural institutions, community-based organizations and other partners and maintaining regular communications. Represent MAAHMG at various community meetings and events.

Qualifications:

Demonstrable success in establishing and conducting community programming. Experience in creating and implementing arts, cultural, and history programming. Proven ability to establish beneficial partnerships with schools and community organizations. Experience working with adults, youth, and children. Outstanding organization, time management, problem solving, and decision-making skills. Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal and presentation skills. Experience with social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Experience with Microsoft Office, Mailchimp, Google products, web design, graphic design and content production. Ability to work independently and be a self-starter. Ability to work some evenings as needed.

The mission of the Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery is to preserve, record and celebrate the achievements, contributions and experiences of African Americans in Minnesota. This purpose is carried out through exhibitions, programs and community events that educate and inform the public about the history, culture and art of Blacks in the State. MAAHMG is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization registered with the State of Minnesota.


COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST


The Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery (MAAHMG) is looking for an energetic individual with excellent written and verbal communications skills to join our team. This position is responsible for the operation of MAAHMG’s external communications and social media presence, and promoting MAAHMG to the public.

This is a part-time position (20 hours per week). Schedule is Monday through Friday to be performed between business hours. Schedule is flexible. This position reports directly to the Co-Founder. This is a 12-month, grant funded position which has the potential for permanent status if additional funding becomes available. Salary is $20,000.

The general responsibilities of the position are to handle public relations, press releases, media requests, social media and promotion of MAAHMG exhibitions, programs and events. Specific tasks include but are not limited to the following:

Write content for and post on MAAHMG’s website and social media platforms. Write and send newsletters and emails to individuals and organizations using MAAHMG’s database. Create and maintain a communications plan for MAAHMG. Draft a social media and marketing plan for MAAHMG. Assist in the promotion of MAAHMG exhibitions and programs to the public, members, donors, partners and other cultural organizations and institutions. Coordinate and respond to media requests including scheduling interviews. Draft and disseminate press releases. Draft media statements on behalf of MAAHMG. Build relationships with community members and key stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or demonstrated professional experience of a minimum of two years in communications, public relations, journalism or marketing. Outstanding organization, time management, problem solving, and decision-making skills. Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal and presentation skills. Experience and knowledge in copywriting, proofreading and editing. Photo and video-editing skills. Experience with social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube, and knowledge in updating website and social media platforms. Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Experience with Microsoft Office, Mailchimp, Google products, web design, graphic design and content production.

HISTORY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery (MAAHMG) is accepting applications for its newly created History Fellowship program. In its first year, one individual will be selected to spend a 9-month fellowship with the museum to research, write, design, create and install a history exhibition focusing on the subject matter of their choice on African American history in Minnesota. The completed work will be presented in an exhibition at the museum. The Fellow will also plan and participate in at least one community engagement event at the museum. Applications will be reviewed by a panel who will select the individual for the position. This Fellowship is designed to provide experience and opportunities to Blacks, who are underrepresented in careers at museums and in the museum field. A stipend of $10,000 will be paid to the selected Fellow that will be used for research, writing, design and other activities or items necessary to curate a history exhibition and community event at the museum. Funding for the Black History Fellowship program is provided by a grant from the Transformative Black-Led Movement Fund by Nexus Community Partners and Black Visions Collective.

Eligibility: The program is open to individuals who have completed either a B.A. or B.S. college degree in any field of study, subject or discipline. The applicant must live in Minnesota. No housing is provided with this Fellowship.

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

The Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery (MAAHMG) is accepting applications for its newly created Artist-In-Residence program. In its first year, one visual artist will be selected to spend a 9-month residency working with the museum to create new works which will be showcased in an exhibition at the museum. The artist will also plan and participate in at least one community engagement event at the museum. A stipend of $14,000 will be paid to the selected artist that will be used for supplies, materials, research, design and other activities or items necessary to create new works during the residency. The artist cannot work on art that has already been started or exhibit artwork that has been completed and/or already presented in a public show. Applications will be reviewed by a panel who will select the individual for the position. The program is designed to give support, opportunity and exposure to Black artists working in Minnesota to create new works exploring Black history, art and culture. Funding for the Artist-In-Residence program is provided by a grant from the Transformative Black-Led Movement Fund by Nexus Community Partners and Black Visions Collective, a donation from the Eulysses and Janet Aiken Fund (Ta-coumba Aiken), and a donation from Seitu Jones.

Eligibility: The program is open to artists at all stages of their career including new, emerging and experienced. The position is for visual artists in any of the mediums of painting, photography, ceramics, sculpture, or drawing. The applicant must live in Minnesota. No housing is provided with this residency. There is no educational requirement.
