Welcome, 5th grade families!
August 21, 2024
Dear Families,
Welcome to 5th grade! I am looking forward to a productive year working with you as a partner in your child’s education. It is important that we work together as a team to make sure that your child is working to their highest potential.
A big part of the first few weeks will be spent on team building, classroom policies and procedures, and assessment. Team building activities will help create a sense of belonging within the class. The establishment of classroom policies and procedures will provide consistency and structure. Finally, assessment will provide me with information as to how to design the curriculum to best fit your child’s needs. We will be diving right into the curriculum next Monday.
Charge Acers & Log In
The most important thing students need to do before class every day is to make sure their computer is fully charged and that they are logged into their Google/Gmail account on Google Chrome. Click here to see how to log into Chrome.
Class Website & Student Email
There are two things for your child to check online daily: their email and the class website. The class website will have the daily homework for the current week with links, directions and other details.
Back to School Night Next Thursday, 8/29
I look forward to meeting you in person next Thursday, August 29th, from 5:00-6:15 PM during our Back to School Night. I will provide you with more information on what we will be learning, as well as which online sites/tools we will be using.
Sincerely,
Ms. Lund
See next page for Additional Information:
Behavior Expectations
I have a simple set of rules that I expect the students to follow:
Listen carefully
Follow directions
Be responsible
Be respectful
Always try your hardest
Use good judgment and common sense
Complete all work on time and to the best of your abilities
Communication
The best way to reach me is through my email: slund@lvusd.org. I will do my best to get back to you as promptly as possible during the school week.
For inquiries about science class or any science assignments, please contact our science teacher, Ms. Trautmann: trautmann@lvusd.org
I will be using ParentSquare to send out most communication to parents. Make sure you’re connected to ParentSquare so you don’t miss anything sent out by the school or myself. Click here to get info on how to connect to ParentSquare.

Binder Organization
As a 5th grade teacher, it is my goal to help students become more organized and independent. As seen on the supply list, each student in the class needs to have a three ring binder with 5 subject dividers. These dividers will be used to separate work into the different subjects. In order to utilize class time as efficiently as possible, I am asking you to help your child organize their binder and to keep it organized throughout the year.
Step 1: Please have your child label the subject dividers with the following subject titles: Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, Science.
Step 2: After you are done labeling the dividers, please clip them into the three ring binder in the following order:
1. Reading
2. Writing
3. Math
4. Social Studies
5. Science
Step 3: Check your child’s binder throughout the year to help maintain its organization. My general rule is if the students have been tested on that subject matter, the related materials do not need to remain in their folder. For example, if we have completed our Chapter 1 in math, then the math workbook for chapter 1 along with the notes can be taken out.
Please make sure your child’s folder is set up and ready by Monday of next week.
Homework
Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday for about 30-45 minutes per day excluding extended assignments and daily reading. All assignments are due the following day unless otherwise noted. As an extension of homework, daily reading is highly encouraged– this is probably the most important homework assignment!
Your student should copy down homework assignments into their student planners (given out on the first day of school) and Homework is posted on our class website.
Absent students should email me as early as possible the morning they are out so they can keep up with what is taught in class.

Online Learning Tools
Below is a list of some of the sites/tools the kids will be using right away this year. There are many content specific sites that we will get into soon, but these are the heart and soul of the tools that are used in the district. The district has a website with many resources and tutorials for students and parents.
Google Classroom
Learning management system (LMS).
Many of the assignments for reading, writing and math will be housed here along with our social studies projects.
Click here for instructions for HOW TO SIGN IN and HOW TO JOIN A CLASS.
*I will instruct the students on how to join my reading, writing, math, and social studies Google Classrooms during the first full week of school.
Google Suite
Gmail, Google Drive, Slides, Docs, and much more.
Click here for information on how to sign into Google Chrome to easily access all of these features.
Clever
Clever makes it easy for students to log into many of the other subscription websites that we will be using this year. Just a few clicks and they're in.
Click here to learn a little more about how to use Clever.
Students should learn/memorize their district email address and password ASAP. They will be using it through high school.
