Research shows that students who write more read better and students who read more write better. The two skills must be forever intertwined in an effective reading and writing curriculum. We will read and write often! Students need to read just for the pure joy of it, without stopping to analyze, highlight, reflect, or comment; however, students WILL also be annotating and analyzing on a regular basis using a variety of nonfiction, informational, and literary texts.
In addition to core novels and informational texts, I want my students to immerse themselves in a sea of books. Over the years I have built a diverse classroom library and each summer, much to the delight of Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and my credit card companies, I research teen fiction and update my titles. My goal is to create lifelong readers and writers. We will begin the year in Book Clubs which allow students to share and discuss a book they read in a small group. This book will be their first WARP test of the school year. If you are interested in adding to our classroom library, any books from the AR list are welcome, new and gently used alike. My current and future students will appreciate any donations!
Finally, building a relationship and rapport between student and teacher is essential, especially as high school approaches. Please encourage your student to see me during lunch or email me with any questions or concerns or for extra help. 99% of the time, I am available during lunch! Most of the time, we can work out issues together. Even though middle school students can be hesitant to approach teachers, it is a very important step in building confidence and fostering independence. Of course, please email me yourself whenever necessary. Communication is a critical part of our relationship!
