Dear AEW Parents:
Welcome to my classroom and the 2025-2026 school year. My favorite school days are the first few days of the new semester when I am fortunate enough to meet yet another group of creative, energetic, unique students who will amaze, surprise, and challenge me throughout the year to come. I love teaching reading and writing, and it’s wonderful to work with your kids on these important skills.
Students will be immersed in a twenty-first century academic environment rich in rigor and relevant to their future. A.E. Wright's ELA teachers provide opportunities for growth and creativity while encouraging students to take educational and intellectual risks, open their minds, build positive relationships, and follow the road toward career and college readiness.
Today’s students face unprecedented challenges, including the ever-changing world of technology and its impact on every facet of life. In addition to the California State Standards and CAASPP Assessments, students must learn about AI and its use in education and beyond.
The major areas of focus include:
Building knowledge through content-rich non-fiction and a wide variety of literature
Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational
Regular practice with complex text and its academic language
Effective communication and collaboration, including the appropriate use of AI. Click here for LVUSD's Generative AI Guidance document.
Lots of independent reading!
So…How will we get there?
Independent practice is a deliberately planned extension of class lessons. Students have time in class to begin assignments, review examples, and ask questions. Sometimes assignments will be completed at home, but daily homework will always include 20-30 minutes of independent reading. Additionally, students must allocate time to review and study for tests and quizzes. Late work will be accepted for credit; however, all late work must be submitted the week prior to each 5-week marking period. These dates will be posted, and students will be reminded. Work received late due to EXCUSED absences will be accepted for full credit in accordance with LVUSD policies. NO late work will be accepted during the final week of a grading period and/or after the posted late work deadline.
Student Responsibilities:
Check LVUSD Gmail & Google Classroom [GC] daily
Agendas (posted daily) provide an overview of classwork, homework, upcoming assessments, and important dates.
Charge your device and care for it properly!
Bring headphones + charger
Check *Aeries frequently. Know your grades. Use a BROWSER to check grades. Don't rely solely on the app.
Note: Students should have their own STUDENT Aeries account.
*Do not wait for assignments to become RED boxes in Aeries! When that happens, it's already too late. Check the Agenda stream and GC Classwork tab DAILY to be sure that you have completed all assignments.
Be prepared for class; bring ALL materials daily; be on time.
Complete assignments to the best of your ability and submit work on time.
Ask questions.
Read and write frequently.
Never give up.
