Online audition information
Thank you for auditioning for the 2020-2021 CHS A Cappella Program!
This year, the auditions for both UNSTRUMENTAL and BARE RHYTHM
will be held together in one virtual audition process.
Please complete all of the steps listed below. As this audition process is different than previous years, be sure to read this document carefully so you
understand all the virtual audition guidelines. All students in the CHS Music Program are eligible and encouraged to audition!!
A CAPPELLA SOLO AUDITION GUIDELINES
In a few sentences before you start singing, tell us your name, grade, song you are singing and its original artist, as well as a bit about who you are (why you are auditioning, what musical experience you’ve had, or anything else you might want us to know).
Prepare an excerpt from the contemporary music genre (pop, rock, country, R&B, etc. - no musical theater)
Song must be sung a cappella
Song should be no longer than one minute and 30 seconds
Remember to perform! Unstrumental and Bare Rhythm are as much performance groups as they are vocal groups. Imagine you are on stage at the PAEC and you are singing lead on an Unstrumental or Bare Rhythm song. How would you connect to your audience? How would you move?
Special talents: Feel free to display or discuss other special talents you may have such as beatboxing, dancing, film/audio editing or anything else that you think could benefit our groups.
GUIDELINES FOR RECORDING YOUR VIDEO
Vocals must be unedited.
Please film your video horizontally if possible.
Videos should be filmed from at least the waist up, preferably full body
Make sure that your voice can be heard clearly in all registers
Some helpful tips for recording your video:
Film in a quiet area - avoid spaces near humming appliances, fans, or street noise to help improve the quality of the audio
You may need to adjust the position of your phone, computer, or external microphone to be sure your highest, loudest notes don’t “clip” and your softest notes are clearly audible.
Before you record your first full take, sing the softest and loudest parts of the song, then listen in headphones to see if you need to adjust how far away you are in relation to the microphone.
Find a spot you feel comfortable performing to and sing to that spot. You can try looking above the camera, at the camera, or at yourself on the screen to see what works best for you.
Imagine you are singing to a live audience and not to yourself - make sure you perform! We want to feel your song, not just hear it!
Put thought into your audition. Practice and begin filming early so you can work out any issues you may come across.
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING YOUR VIDEO
Upload your video to YouTube as an “unlisted” video.
Fill out the Google Form (link below) and be sure to copy your unlisted YouTube link where asked. Make sure to fill out the form completely.
ALL ONLINE AUDITIONS ARE DUE BY FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 2020.
If you have questions, email Mr. Barroll at
A callback list with details regarding the second round of auditions will be posted within a few days. Please note that if you are called back, among other things, we will be asking you to sing a second solo.
We look forward to seeing your audition videos and putting together Unstrumental and Bare Rhythm 2020/2021!
