March means good luck and the start of Spring! This month, let's appreciate how lucky we are to be able to learn and read as much as we want to, and to have access to all of the things we need for our learning.
This March in the Media Center we are learning about Women's History Month, as well as Ireland and St. Patrick's Day. We are also celebrating the joy of reading with friends through our "Book Buddies" display.
Stop by the Media Center and tell us all of the things in your lives that make you feel lucky!
Women's History Month is celebrated in March to honor women's important but often overlooked contributions to American history, culture, and society. It started with a movement to fight the absence of women in textbooks and bring their achievements into the mainstream.
Womn's History Month evolved from a 1978 Women's History Week California to national tradition in 1987. It encourages us to recognize women's struggles, celebrate their successes, and keep striving for gender equality, highlighting their roles as innovators, leaders, and changemakers.
Come check out our Women's History Month display for books about AMAZING women and the AWESOME stuff they did and are still doing!
Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th, and it’s a day full of green, gold, and good luck! It honors Saint Patrick, who was born in Britain in the late 300s. When he was a teenager, he was captured by pirates and taken to Ireland as a slave. After several years, he escaped—but later chose to return to Ireland as a missionary to teach people about Christianity. Legend says he used a tiny three-leaf clover called a shamrock to explain his teachings. He became one of Ireland’s most important historical figures, and March 17th marks the day he died.
Over time, Saint Patrick’s Day grew from a religious feast day in Ireland into a worldwide celebration of Irish culture. Irish immigrants brought the holiday to places like the United States, where it became even bigger. Today, people celebrate with bright green clothes, festive parades, lively music, and Irish dancing. In some cities, rivers are even dyed green! You might also hear fun tales about leprechauns hiding pots of gold at the end of rainbows. Whether you’re Irish or not, Saint Patrick’s Day is a joyful time to celebrate history, culture, and a little bit of lucky magic.
