2025 Devotions
Children of the Heavenly Father LSB #725 Based on the hymn written by Carolina Sandell Berg and the scripture passage Matthew 6:26 ESV. “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” What a comfort and joy to know the depth of His Fatherly love for all His children as we sing “Children of the Heavenly Father…” Download
A Hymn for Every Day This devotion is based on the hymn “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven” LSB # 793 and Psalm 103:1-2 “Bless the Lord, O my soul and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits …” Brides have used the triumphant music for their walk down the aisle. sung as a congregational hymn, personal prayer of praise and adoration to our God, at a funeral one last time down the aisle. It is a song of praise, “A Hymn for Every Day”. Download
Tidings of Comfort and Joy The title of this devotion is part of the chorus of the Christmas Carol “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”. It was written in the 16th century, author unknown. It is said that during the Great Plague in 1665, night watchmen would go through the streets of London singing carols, providing a sense of calm amidst all their troubles. Even today we still suffer troubles and anxiety and we too find comfort in the sound of the words “remember Christ our Savior” as sung in this carol, and go to Him in prayer. After all, He is the One who brings us “Tidings of Comfort and Joy. Download
Jesus Loves Me LSB #588 An interesting devotion that gives us some background about the author Anna Warner who wrote it as a poem and later put to music by Dr. William Bradbury. “This ageless song is sung on the lips of the dying, the lonely, the new Christian and the child.” Great words of encouragement for everyone. “Jesus loves me, this I know for the Bible tells me so.”

All the Way Home A deep thought-provoking devotion on how vital it is to realize the need of God’s grace to get oneself home to heaven. This grace is not just an occasional fix-up -but rather the need of God’s lifelong pouring out of His continuing grace. Verses from the hymn, “O Christ Our Hope,” (LW #151 or LSB #553) state that His love can purge us of our pride and bring us all the way home! Download

God Will Take of You This devotion is based on the hymn “God will Take Care of You” and 1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you”, written by Civilla D. Martin, wife of Walter Stillman Martin a Baptist minister and composer of the music. We are encouraged throughout scripture that God will take care of each and every detail of our lives. Trust in Him. Download
How I came to write “A New Song for Jesus” Lutheran Women Sing This devotion offers encouragement to those who struggle with drug addiction or are helping someone close to them. An LWMLC mother shares her story with her son and shares her faith and wisdom in dealing with their situation. Family support makes a difference in recovery. It was during this time she was inspired to write “A New Song for Jesus which also became a 2024 LWMLC convention hymn. Download
My Faith Looks Up to Thee LSB #702 Written in 1830 by Ray Palmer in his diary. The words he wrote were an out pouring of his faith. In his words “there was not the slightest thought of writing for another eye, least of all writing a hymn for Christian worship.” “We too, can read and sing the words from this hymn and, through our own experiences, feel what he is saying, especially during Lent.” Download

It is Well With My Soul Based on the hymn “When Peace Like a River” LSB # 763 written by Horatio Spafford, a hymnist and Presbyterian elder. He and his wife suffered many tragedies during their life which led him to the writing of this hymn. This devotion and hymn are a great encouragement when we face the uncertainties of this life. Whatever storm or tragedies we face “our faith in a loving God and trust in His divine help can enable us to say, “It is well, it is well with my soul.” Download

Onward Christian Soldiers LSB # 662 This hymn was written by Rev. Sabine Baring Gould in 1865 for Pentecost Sunday. He was a teacher and wanted a marching song to lead the children to the next village for the church service.” It is a suitable hymn to be sung as we remember our veterans on Remembrance Day and for ourselves as we fight battles in our lives. “As Christian Soldiers we don’t have to fight our battles alone, God is with us.” Download
Jesus, Our Friend This devotion gives an interesting account how the hymn “What a Friend we Have in Jesus “ LSB # 770 came to be. The words were written by Joseph Scriven, an Irish immigrant to Canada (1800’s) as a poem. He originally named it “Pray Without Ceasing” expressing his grief and faith after losing two former fiancées to death. The poem was later found and passed on to someone in the publishing world and the lyrics became known as “What a friend We Have in Jesus”. Download
A Translator Gave Us Many Beloved Hymns Catherine Winkworth is renowned as a translator of nearly 400 German hymns, 51 of her translations appear in the Lutheran Service book (LBW).
