Reading - Writing - Speaking - Listening
The goal of this class is for students to master the skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students will develop the ability to read as they interact with class novels, short stories and excerpts, and with each other while practicing reading skills like summarizing and using context clues. Students will develop as a writer as they practice responding to literature, reporting on research, developing and refuting arguments, and more. Students will also practice speaking and listening by presenting in front of the class and by engaging in formal and informal small-group discussions.
WHAT MATERIALS ARE NEEDED FOR CLASS?
Charged and functioning chromebook (DAILY)
Pencil, pen, blue/black marker
Lined college rule paper
FOUR - 70 page, spiral bound, college rule notebooks
Highlighters (pink, blue, green, and yellow)
All written assignments will be assigned through Google Classroom.
Students HAVE TO turn in the assignment on Google Classroom for the assignment to be considered complete.
The number of points at the end of the grading period will determine a letter grade, which will be calculated as percentages.
GRADING SCALE
100-99% = A+
98-93% = A
92-90%= A-
89-87%= B+
86-83%= B
82-80%= B-
79-77% = C+
76-73% = C
72-70% = C-
69-67%= D+
66-63% = D
62-60% = D-
59-0% = F
Plagiarism is the use of someone else’s ideas, passed off as one’s own. Often, plagiarism comes in written form, as in the use of someone’s words from a book or website without the proper quotation marks and reference. Plagiarism can also be spoken during formal speeches.
The consequences for plagiarism include a ZERO on the assignment and punishment up to and including suspension.
If a student is absent, he/she will have one day to make up the work for every excused absence day. For example, if a student is absent for two days, he/she will have two days to make up the assigned work for full credit.
GOOGLE CLASSROOM
Late work will be accepted any time past a due date until the end of the unit for a maximum of 50% of the homework’s point value. Students must turn in the assignment on Google Classroom AND notify the teacher (via email) that the assignment is completed.
