In the modern world, when looking for news, people are often flooded with seemingly endless options. With all these options, it can often seem impossible to find which sources are reliable. When considering the reliability of a source, there are two main factors to consider.
First is bias. Bias is the opinion of the source, and it can often influence the way that the source reports the news, distorting what actually happened. Usually, it is best to use a source with the least bias, as they are more likely to report just the facts.
Second is factuality. Factuality is a measure of how much true information is being reported on by the source. A source with high factuality is the most reliable as it gives a better picture of what actually happened.
These factors can be checked using a tool called the Ad Fontes Interactive Media Bias Chart. Click here to check it out, and to see which sources are and are not reliable.
Welcome or welcome back to another weekly news update. Due to weather and parent teacher conferences last week, this will be another two week update.
A lot has happened in these past two weeks. For starters, the United States has entered a war with Iran. On Saturday the 28th of February, the US and Israel launched preemptive strikes on Iran. In those strikes, Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and other top Iranian officials were killed. Since then, both sides have traded missile strikes, with Iran targeting both Israel and middle eastern countries with US bases in them. As of Wednesday the eleventh, seven American soldiers have been killed in the war, with many more injured.
As for the effects of the war on the US, oil prices have skyrocketed after Iran closed off the Strait of Hormuz, a major trade route, and those prices continue to rise as the strait remains closed. Due to this, gas prices have jumped up over 60 cents a gallon in the US. How long will this last? Experts are unsure, but the Iranian government says that for the near future, it plans on keeping the strait closed.

Welcome or welcome back to another weekly news update. This week is a little bit different, as, due to February vacation last week, this will be a two week update.
A lot has happened in these past two weeks. The Olympics have finished, with the Paralympics still to come in March. The US claimed both the men's and women's hockey gold medals in a historic Olympics for both teams, with the women having a record setting shutout streak, and the men winning their first gold in 46 years, the last one coming in 1980 from the famed Miracle on Ice team.
Controversy has however struck the men's team from an incident involving them, President Trump, and the women's team. After the men's win, Trump was recorded on call with the men's team extending them an invite to his State of the Union address. After that, he said that he 'had to' invite the women's team as well or he'd be impeached. That comment was generally met with laughter from the team. After the women's team declined the President's invitation, their team captain Hilary Knight has recently come out calling the comment by Trump distasteful.
In related News, President Trump delivered his State of the Union address on Tuesday. The State of the Union address is a speech that is delivered by the President to Congress and other government officials that is delivered around the halfway point of the President's term. In his address, Trump focused heavily on the economy. He also spoke highly of his peace initiatives throughout the world.

This has been an exciting week across the world. In Milan and Cortina Italy, the 60th Olympic Winter Games are in full swing. The USA, as of 2/12, has won 14 medals so far, four gold, seven silver, and three bronze. Though the Olympics have been underway for just about a week, there is still much action to come. Men's hockey has just kicked off, a historical event this year as it is the first time in 12 years that NHL players are allowed to compete. In addition to this, history is also being made by two other events, ski mountaineering and women's double luge, as they make their Olympic debut.
Despite all the celebration, controversy has struck the Olympics. In the men's skeleton event, Ukrainian athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych was disqualified due to his "helmet of remembrance" which depicted Ukrainian athletes who have been killed in Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Olympic Committee says the helmet violated their rules of keeping politics out of the Olympics. The committee tried to reach a compromise with Heraskevych, allowing him to showcase the helmet as long as he did not race in it. Heraskevych refused.
Feel free to read on about these stores from the sources bellow, and I encourage you to go to the Olympic website to immerse yourself in the Olympic experience, as the next winter games are not for another four years.
There have been many developments in the news this week. In Minnesota, following the ICE shootings that have happened there in the past few weeks (scroll down to the January 23-30 News Update for more on those shootings), 700 ICE, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, agents are being withdrawn. 2,000 agents will remain in the state, and will continue to carry out ICE operations, which is a larger number of agents than the ones there before the first major ICE deployment in Minnesota during the Trump administration.
In other news, on Wednesday, The US Supreme Court made a decision allowing California to redraw its congressional districts, tilting some of its seats in the house more in favor of the Democrats. This could raise the chances of the Democrats regaining control of the house. This follows similar moves by Texas who used a similar process to tilt some of their seating in the house in favor of the Republicans. This has possible ramifications of setting a dangerous precedent in which states can freely change their congressional maps to help one party or the other.

This week has been one full of noteworthy news. On Saturday the 24th, a US citizen named Alex Pretti was shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, in Minnesota. There have been various reports on what happened during his encounter with ICE, with some claiming he brandished a weapon. Other sources and video evidence however do not seem to show this, but an investigation has yet to happen to reveal the truth. This follows the previous ICE killing of Renee Good in Minnesota, sparking further protest in the area.
In other news, President Trump claims to have reached an agreement with Russian president Vladimir Putin. He says that Putin has promised not to fire on Ukrainian capital Kyiv for a week during extreme cold.
