Beetlejuice
The film Beetlejuice was a major starting point in Tim Burton’s career, and without it, he wouldn't have been recognized as the notable director he’s known as today. It is clear to see that he took complete creative liberties over this movie, and has said repeatedly that he incorporated his personal experiences as an “outcast”. This movie truly showcases his experiences, while still retaining to have its theatrical elements, and being realistic to those who might currently feel that way. Beetlejuice is a movie that follows a young couple who are killed in a car crash off a bridge. It takes us through their journey of learning about what death is like for them. When the Deetz move in, they’re desperate to scare them away, but fail when the teenage daughter grows fond of them. This film displays the contrast between life and death while also incorporating levity to a difficult situation.
★★★⯪☆
What we thought was particularly interesting about this movie was the color grading. The entire film is shot through a very saturated lens. While being a film about a dark concept is told through comedy and bright, colorful images. Lydia is a character that we all found very interesting. She is a complete contrast to her Dad and her Stepmom, which adds depth to her character, and incorporates the outcast mentality that Tim Burton hones in on with her character. Beetlejuice is a misguided character who exploits the newlywed, deceased couple to get what he wants, often leaving chunks of information about his plans out.
