Unit Three - Narrative Writing

During this unit, students will be reading the book Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. This book is fictional and is a popular coming of age story that focuses on the importance of individuality and embracing who you are as an individual without succumbing to peer pressure. This book prompts great discussions in class about how to treat acquaintances and have empathy towards others.

characterization and conflict
incorporating dialogue and figurative language in writing
comma and quotation usage
using context clues for unknown words and phrases
- additional Greek and Latin root words not covered in unit two

Honors ELA

Students will be completing a book cover project where they have to rate the book as if they were a book reviewer and use creativity to make a new book cover.

Movie vs. Book

At the end of the unit, students will have the opportunity to watch the Disney+ Stargirl movie. We will compare the events in the book to the movie and discuss the impact certain scenes have on the overall plot.
