During this unit, students will be reading a historical nonfiction novel with their class. Students will have multiple written response assignments where they will learn how to properly cite evidence from the text.

Teachers have a class set of books. This means that the books will be used for three other classes throughout the day. If you wish to buy your child his/her own copy of the book he/she will be reading, please contact his/her teacher to find out which book is needed.
Honors classes during this time will be reading the novel, Hidden Figures - Young Reader's Edition, as the anchor text. This book covers multiple historical events, such as: the Civil Rights Movement, Space Race, and Cold War. Students will do a short research project on their chosen historical event and present their findings. We will compare the novel to different short stories and look at how authors perspectives differ. At the end of the unit we will watch the Hidden Figures movie (rated PG). Parents can expect to see a movie permission slip go home.

Due to the high reading level of this book, students should expect multiple vocabulary quizzes throughout the course of the novel. Understanding the complex vocabulary used in this novel is crucial to comprehending the events and character perspectives.
