Intermediate School Programs

Beginner strings - violin, viola, cello or bass is open to any 4th grade student interested in learning an instrument. Registration begins in October of 4th grade. Students are encouraged to play all year long. Students receive a lesson once every 6 days. They are required to have an instrument to participate a handful of school instruments are available if needed. 

5th and 6th grade orchestra students that learned violin, viola, cello or bass in 4th or 5th grade are encouraged to play again as 5th and 6th graders. Students receive a lesson once every 6 days and orchestra which will be on an additional day or time. A little more practice is required at home as we will have two concerts and additional performance opportunities throughout the school year. In 5th and 6th grade students are welcome to audition for select string ensemble. 

Select string ensemble is an advanced ensemble that requires the students to audition to participate in it. If selected, they will have an extra rehearsal during the 6 day rotating schedule and more challenging pieces. Additional performance opportunities are available for members of the string ensemble.

Pitch Black is the audition-only, select vocal ensemble here at LIS!

 It is open to all 5th and 6th grade students! Auditions are held each year and those with the top scores based on auditions are accepted! 

We sing at the Winter and Spring chorus concerts, as well as several concerts throughout the year! We have sung at LHS baseball and basketball games, the LHS Black History Month Celebration, and around Lawrence for other events!

All advanced ensembles require practice outside of school!

*Students may only participate in ONE advanced ensemble!
