The LHS Concert Band is designed for the developing instrumentalist and is open to all brass and woodwind players. There is no pre-requisite for this course, however many students in Concert Band have prior experience in their elementary and middle school bands. The ensemble meets every other school day for 77 minutes and students receive one 30 minute sectional every two weeks. The group performs 2-3 concerts each year and plays a diverse selection of Grade 2-3 literature. Students enrolled in Concert Band are eligible to audition for CJMEA Regional Honors Ensembles and participate in other local honors groups.
The LHS Percussion Ensemble is designed for the developing isntrumentalist and is open to all percussionists. There is no pre-requisite for this course, however many students in Percussion Ensemble have prior experience in their elementary and middle school bands. The ensemble meets every other school day for 77 minutes and students receive one 30 minute sectional every two weeks. Students will learn battery percussion, mallet percussion and timpani and become fluent on all auxiliary percussion instruments as well. The group performs 2-3 concerts each year and plays a diverse selection of Grade 2-3 literature. Students enrolled in Percussion Ensemble are eligible to audition for CJMEA Regional Honors Ensembles and participate in other local honors groups.
The LHS Wind Ensemble is an Honors level course designed for advanced brass, woodwind and percussion students. Enrollment in this course is based upon a successful audition with the Director. The ensemble meets every other school day for 77 minutes and students receive one 30 minute sectional every two weeks. The group performs 2-3 concerts each year and plays a diverse selection of Grade 4 literature. Students enrolled in Concert Band are eligible to audition for CJMEA Regional Honors Ensembles and participate in other local honors groups.
String Orchestra - The LHS String Orchestra is open to all instrumentalists who wish to further develop their skills on violin, viola, cello or bass. There is no pre-requisite for this course, however many students in Orchestra have prior experience in their elementary and middle school orchestras. The ensemble meets every other school day for 77 minutes and students receive one 30 minute sectional every two weeks. The group performs 2-3 concerts each year and plays a diverse selection of Grade 2-3 literature. Students enrolled in String Orchestra are eligible to audition for CJMEA Regional Honors Ensembles and participate in other local honors groups.
Marching Band - The award winning LHS Cardinal Marching Band is THE pride of Lawrence. The Marching Band consists of brass, woodwind and percussion students as well as the Color Guard (flag/rifle.) The group is open to anyone, however it is highly encouraged that instrumentalists be a part of a curricular performing ensemble. The Marching Band rehearses 2-3 times after school each week and performs at all football games, numerous community events and parades, school assemblies and several local and regional competitions. The group begins its season at an August camp and rehearsals run through the beginning of November.
The Jazz Big Band is the elite instrumental group at LHS. The group is open to anyone who plays sax, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar or drumset. Selection is based on a stringent audition process in December of each year. Wind players should also be enrolled in a curricular performance ensemble and it is encouraged that rhythm section players do the same. Students will learn the fundamentals of improvisation and be able to perform in a variety of different jazz styles. The Big Band rehearses twice per week after school from January through May. They perform at numerous school events including Black History Month and Culture Fest. In addition, the group performs at several local and regional competitions.
Concert Choir is Lawrence High School's foundation choir. In addition to enjoying a wide variety of music, musicians in concert choir focus on building excellent vocal technique and musicality. This course that is made up of students who possess a high degree of motivation towards singing. The curriculum scaffolds basic music theory as applied to singing and vocal techniques. Students are showcased in a winter and spring concert along with their colleagues in our other LHS Choirs. No audition is required. Students in Concert Choir are eligible to audition for CJMEA Regional Honor Ensembles and to participate in other local honors groups.
Treble Ensemble is Lawrence High School's premier treble choir. This group is made up of hard-working, qualified students who demonstrate considerable vocal ability and motivation. Ensemble's curriculum focuses on scaffolding bel canto technique, sight reading and musicianship skills, music theory, and analysis of repertoire. In addition to performing in both the winter and spring concerts, Ensemble is often requested to represent LHS by singing at events throughout the community and on-tour. Treble Ensemble is immersed in challenging repertoire from all time periods and backgrounds, in 3 to 4 part harmony. Admission is by successful audition with the director.
Honors Madrigal Choir is a course that emphasizes advanced voice technique, music theory, honors high school to college repertoire work, and interpretation. Madrigal is open to the most advanced and motivated vocal students. Members are showcased in a wide variety of school, community, and on-tour performances. Admission is by audition, but it is strongly recommended that students first spend a year each in Concert Choir and Ensemble. Honors Choir meets overy other day for 77 minutes and students receive one 30 minute sectional lesson each week. Students in Honors Choir are eligible and encouraged to audition for CJMEA Regional Honors Ensembles and other local honors groups.
The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society for high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements and to provide leadership and service opportunities to youngmusicians.

Eligible students must be enrolled in at least one music class throughout their membership, have a GPA of at least 2.0 in their core classes, and a 3.0 in their music class(es), in addition to being of strong character.
