Enrichment and Gifted Education

Here at LTPS, Enrichment and Gifted Education Programming is provided in a progression of services from Kindergarten through 12 Grade.
The NJ “Strengthening Gifted and Talented Education Act” defines a gifted and talented student as a “student who possesses or demonstrates a high level of ability in one or more content areas when compared to their chronological peers in the school district and who require modifications of their educational program if they are to achieve in accordance with their capabilities. ”
The Board of Education of the Lawrence Township Public School District defines gifted and talented students as those who demonstrate abilities, talents, and potential for achievement at an advanced level. Instructional programming and curricular adjustments are designed to meet the needs of both gifted and twice-exceptional learners. The identification process is developmentally appropriate, equitable, and aligned with district programs and services.
As part of this process, all students in grades 2, 4, and 6 complete a nonverbal reasoning assessment to help enrichment teachers identify advanced abilities in problem solving, creative ideation, and critical thinking. In addition, teachers may refer students who demonstrate advanced skills in the classroom, at which point a portfolio is developed that includes a range of assessments, rubrics, and samples of student work. Portfolios are reviewed by the Enrichment and Gifted Education Committee to identify students who may benefit from additional enrichment opportunities and/or high levels of differentiated instruction.
While parents are welcome to complete a parent inventory form to provide additional insight into their child’s thinking, it is not a requirement since all students are assessed annually.

At the heart of the LTPS Gifted Education Program is the research of Joseph Renzulli and his Three-Ring Theory of Giftedness. We believe giftedness is not defined by test scores alone, but emerges when three powerful traits come together: above-average ability, creativity, and strong task commitment. When students demonstrate curiosity, originality, perseverance, and advanced thinking, they are showing gifted behaviors. Our district is committed to identifying and nurturing these strengths in all students by providing equitable access to enriched, challenging, and meaningful learning experiences. We believe creative problem solving, critical thinking and deep intellectual curiosity can be developed, and we strive to create opportunities that allow every learner to grow, thrive, and apply their abilities in purposeful and impactful ways.
