Gifted Education Program and Services
Gifted Education Mission Statement
The Lawrence Public Schools are committed to providing extraordinary learning for all students. In alignment with this mission, the Board of Education ensures that every learner has access to a challenging and rigorous academic program. We recognize that gifted students demonstrate (or have the potential to demonstrate) high levels of ability in intellectual, creative, and problem-solving domains.
We believe gifted students are individuals with unique strengths who require intentional support to discover, develop, and realize their potential as both learners and contributing members of society. It is our responsibility to provide diverse, responsive, and ongoing educational opportunities that address their academic, social, and emotional needs. Through enriched and differentiated experiences, we challenge gifted students to deepen their thinking, expand their knowledge, and grow as independent, self-directed learners who question, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate ideas with curiosity and purpose.
State Regulations
State regulations (N.J.A.C. 6A:8-3.1) define gifted and talented students as follows:
Those students who possess or demonstrate high levels of ability, in one or more content areas, when compared to their chronological peers in the local district and who require modification of their educational program if they are to achieve in accordance with their capabilities.
LTPS Gifted Education Identification Philosophy
Children enter school with a wide range of abilities, interests, experiences, and readiness levels. Talent and potential are not confined to age, and students may demonstrate advanced abilities at any stage of development. Especially in the early years, it can be difficult to distinguish between advanced skills resulting from enriched experiences and those reflecting exceptional intellectual potential. For this reason, identification must be thoughtful, comprehensive, and responsive to the whole child. Identification is an ongoing process aimed at recognizing academic and/or social-emotional needs related to giftedness. Students are not labeled as “gifted.” The purpose of identification is to inform targeted opportunities and interventions within and beyond the classroom, and provide services that support these students.
Giftedness is more than reaching milestones early or mastering skills quickly. Gifted learners often display intense curiosity, ask complex questions, demonstrate skills rapidly without any pre-learning, retain information easily, and think in ways that differ from their peers. They may demonstrate high energy, deep sensitivity, creativity, or perfectionism. Without appropriate differentiated challenge and support, these traits can become sources of frustration rather than growth. Recognizing and nurturing giftedness is essential for students to thrive.
Students with strong intellectual aptitude typically show an advanced capacity to understand, analyze, and apply complex concepts. Their cognitive development often allows them to engage with material at greater depth and abstraction than age-level expectations. The purpose of our identification process is not simply to label students, but to use multiple measures and a whole child lens to determine whose learning needs require differentiated and enriched educational opportunities.
