Pitch Black!

Pitch Black is the audition-only, select vocal ensemble here at LIS!

 It is open to all 5th and 6th grade students! Auditions are held each year and those with the top scores based on auditions are accepted! 

We sing at the Winter and Spring chorus concerts, as well as several concerts throughout the year! We have sung at LHS baseball and basketball games, the LHS Black History Month Celebration, and around Lawrence for other events!

All advanced ensembles require practice outside of school!

*Students may only participate in ONE advanced ensemble!

Audition Rubric- Students were scored on the following criteria for acceptance into Pitch Black:


Pitch

4- Virtually no errors. Pitch is very accurate.

3- An occasional isolated error, but most of the time pitch is accurate and secure.

2- Some accurate pitches, but there are frequent and/or repeated errors.

1- Very few accurate or secure pitches.

Rhythm

4- The beat is secure and the rhythms are accurate.

3- The beat is secure and the rhythms are mostly accurate. There are a few duration errors, but these do not detract from the overall performance.

2- The beat is somewhat erratic. Some rhythms are accurate. Frequent or repeated duration errors.

1- The beat is mostly erratic and rhythms are seldom accurate.

Tone Quality

4- Tone is consistently focused, clear, and centered throughout the full range of the voice. Student shifts between head and chest voice appropriately.

3- Tone is focused, clear, and centered through the normal singing range. Extremes in range sometimes cause tone to be less controlled.

2- Tone is often focused, clear, and centered, but sometimes the tone is uncontrolled in the normal singing range. Extremes in range are usually uncontrolled. The voice sounds breathy.

1- Tone is often not focused, clear, or centered regardless of the range, significantly detracting from the overall performance. There is more breath than sound in the tone.

Vowels

4- Vowels are consistently tall, contributing to an appropriate tone quality.

3- Vowels are mostly tall with a few moments sticking out.

2- Vowels are mostly spread, detracting from the tone quality and performance.

1- Vowels are consistently spread contributing to an inappropriate tone quality.
