6th grade may be the only window of time a student can learn to play an instrument in their school career. It doesn't get any easier than this! Band gives incoming 6th grade students a sense of belonging to a group even before they enter BCMS. Students meet the teacher, test their instruments, tour the band hall, and already know students who will be in their class... all before the first day!
No. We will teach your child everything they need to know, step by step. From how to assemble and care for the instrument to reading notes and rhythms. All that is needed from you is an enthusiastic attitude and patient ears when your child comes home to make their first sounds.
Our beginner band classes are scheduled into like-instrument groupings allowing students to learn the fundamentals of their instrument and specific skills or techniques in a homogeneous setting. It is fun to learn alongside their peers who play the same instrument. When we have concerts, we will perform as a full band, with all of the instruments, together.
Absolutely! In fact many of our students participate in a sport or club outside of band and manage to find time to practice and be successful in both activities.
The answer depends on a variety of things, but in the end, it is most important that they play something that they enjoy. I encourage you to explore our website, watch the different instrument videos with your child, and discuss the different options. We will also help guide your child based on his/her musical interests, physical make-up, and instrument availability. Your child knows what he/she wants, you know your child, and I know music. Together, we will find the instrument that they will enjoy and give them the best chance of musical success.
Music is no different than any other curricular area. We ask that your child spend some time with their instrument each and every week, on average 20 and 30 minutes each night. Think of it as "musical homework," but much more fun!
Graded performances happen after school in the evening as well. Beginner band students typically have 4 concerts, approximately one hour in length, throughout the school year.
In 7th and 8th grade, there are also weekly before or after school sectionals that happen once a week for 40 minutes.
If your child is interested in band and cost is a concern, we will make it work, don't worry. Certain instruments (bassoon, horn, euphonium, tuba) are all provided by the district for a nominal one-time fee. We are also happy to discuss a limited supply of other school-owned instruments for students in need. We have a variety of tools for families that need financial assistance!
Remember when your child wouldn't eat the food you made for them? You always said, "Try it before you decide you don't like it." Band is the same way! Your child should sign up for band even if you or they are unsure.
Our program and school schedule are geared toward students starting band in 6th grade. Beginning at this time allows your child to progress with their peer group and it is the best time to join!
