Donors Choose is a nonprofit organization that was created in 2000 by Charles Best, a history teacher in the Bronx. This organization serves as a forum for teachers to request items that are needed for their classrooms, and it allows anyone to help donate to classrooms that are in need.
I discovered Donors Choose during my 2015-2016 winter break and submitted my first "project" on January 29, 2016. This first project, a request for a class set of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, was fully funded on March 11, 2016. My second and third projects (for class sets of Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies) were submitted on April 6, 2016, and both were funded on April 7, 2016 (thanks to J. Crew and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation). Since then, I have received over ten thousand dollars worth of books, supplies, technology, and professional development opportunities. And I plan to continue to post projects for the things my students need as well as for experiences that will help me become the teacher I would want my own children to have.
Recently, I was asked to become a DonorsChoose Teacher Ambassador. Teacher Ambassadors “work with DonorsChoose.org staff and teachers to help more teachers in their area tap into funding through DonorsChoose.org, making sure students can have the best school year without teachers/educators needing to foot the bill out of their own paycheck.”
DonorsChoose has been such a blessing for my students, my classroom, and my professional development. Since my introduction to DonorsChoose, I’ve had close to $20,000 worth of projects funded! These projects added books, technology, consumable materials, and other supplies to my classroom. One particular project allowed me to attend a once-in-a-lifetime professional development opportunity at the Ron Clark Academy! To see my list of completed projects, visit my DonorsChoose page.
