Hi everyone, welcome back! I hope you had a smooth week getting back into the groove of things. Please read this letter in its entirety, as it has A LOT of important information.
Next week we will be focusing on more vowel teams: Oi and Oy. Here is a little guide on how to help your kiddo on reading and spelling words with oi and oy:
These two letters work together, they make one sound — the /oi/ sound, like in coin or boy.
How to pronounce it:
The /oi/ sound starts with your mouth open like you are saying “aw,” then quickly slides to a “ee” sound. Try saying: oi! (like when you are surprised).
How to help your kiddo spell words with oi and oy:
A helpful rule we practice at school is:
oi usually comes in the middle of a word (coin, soil, join)
oy usually comes at the end of a word or syllable (boy, toy, enjoy)
When your kiddo is spelling:
Say the word slowly together.
Listen for the /oi/ sound.
Ask: “Do we hear the sound in the middle or at the end?”
Choose oi for the middle and oy for the end.
Practicing by reading and writing simple words like toy, coin, joy, and boil will help strengthen this new spelling pattern!
oil
boil
soil
coin
join
point
joint
joy
toy
boy
We have finished our Unit 10 math test and I will be grading those and sending them home sometime next week. Next week we will do our last math benchmark of the year! WOW!! We will also be starting Unit 11: Subtraction within 100. Be on the lookout for the family letter describing what this unit will be about.
We are finishing up our narrative writing including a problem and solution. Our next writing unit will be poetry!
We started our Museum of Leafology in science this week. REMINDER: please make sure your kiddo has collected 2-4 plants in a sandwich bag as on Monday we will be adding them to our journal and writing observations on what we notice about the plants. Here is that letter again:
Today, your kiddo will be bringing home a plastic sandwich bag labeled with their name. For this activity, please help your child collect 2–4 plant or flower samples (no less and no more) to place inside the bag. We will be gluing these into our science journals and using them to write and discuss our observations in class.
Where can you collect plants?
You can gather samples from:
Your own yard
A neighborhood walk
A park (please follow park guidelines)
A hike or outdoor outing
Examples of good items to collect:
Leaves (different shapes or sizes)
Small flowers or petals
Grass or clover
Pine needles
Small plant stems or plant pieces
Please avoid:
Anything bulky or thick
Food items (such as fruits or vegetables)
Wet or muddy plants that may not glue well
While you’re out collecting, this is a great opportunity to talk like scientists! You might ask your child:
What do you notice about this plant?
How are these plants the same? How are they different?
Which plant is bigger, smaller, smoother, or rougher?
All plant collections are due no later than Monday, April 6.
School Day Schedule Change 4/6-4/14

If your kiddo has a dismissal change:
Just a quick reminder to please notify me directly if your kiddo has a dismissal change for the day. Recently, several students have shared changes with me right at dismissal time, and without prior communication from home, it can be difficult to confirm plans.
To help ensure every student gets home safely and to the correct location, please send me an email or message through our usual communication method whenever there is a change to your kiddo’s normal dismissal routine.
Thank you so much for helping keep our end-of-day process safe and smooth for everyone!
Burning Tree Picnic:
At the end of the year we have a picnic in the neighborhood Burning Tree (date below); however, in order to do this we need someone who lives in Burning Tree so that we can have access to get to the bathrooms where the pool is. If you, or know someone, who lives in Burning Tree, please let us know!
For March, the Word of the Month was 'Character!' Character shapes how students treat others and make choices each day. Showing strong character allows students to help build a respectful and trustworthy school community. Lexi was chosen as Student of the Month for March & showcasing what it is to show great character amongst her peers and teachers. Way to go Lexi!!!

We finished Unit 10 in math; however we will be doing a reteach the week we get back from Spring Break and test that week as well. As you may have seen through the exit tickets this week, this is a very tricky unit. If you are able to even go over one problem a day (or take one from an exit ticket and create a new problem out of it!) from the additional practice packet I sent home that would be awesome!!
Our When I Grow Up books have been sent out!! I am so excited to see it all put together! When we get back we will be talking in depth about characters and settings and writing a narrative piece.
In Science we will be hitting our LAST science unit!😮🫨🫣 'Museum of Leafology' - in this unit, the kiddos will observe plants through hands-on activities like outdoor nature explorations and growing their own seedlings. They will also be investigating different plant parts.
Heritage High School’s Student Government is hosting a Student vs. Staff Basketball Game on Friday, April 3rd, from 6:00pm - 8:30pm. It is a major fundraising event that is part of our Wish Week. Our goal is to grant seven wishes for kids in the Denver/Littleton area. We would really appreciate it if you could spread the message across your school and advertise to your students about helping show up to this game. It is a $5 entry fee, with concessions, games, and school spirit. Please show up! Thank you!

Hi everyone! I hope you had a great week! Since we are heading into Spring Break soon, I want to make sure everyone is staying healthy and well. I am doing my part making sure we are deeply cleaning at the end of each day, extra hand santizers, and making sure to wash our hands. We have all different types of illnesses that have hit our classroom hard this week - if you notice any new symptoms your child has started to present, please keep an eye on it. Please help us reduce the spread of illnesses going around - thank you, I greatly appreciate it!
Spelling pattern next week follows R-Controlled vowels! You may know it as bossy R!

This week in Superkids we had some fun putting together cut apart sentences and determining the correct 'aw' word that completed the sentence. We worked together as a group to make a picture that matches the sentence. We learned about antonyms and we played heads up with a word where our partner had to give us the antonym of the word to make us guess! Scroll down for photos of both of this stuff!
WOW - the math tests were excellent!! They have been working REALLY hard on this unit and they are amazing mathematicians. Tests were sent home today! Next week and the week after Spring Break we will be focusing on Unit 10: Compare Using Addition and Subtraction - this can be a VERY confusing unit. Look in your kiddo's green folder for the parent letter explaining in more detail what this unit will include.
We started learning about maps and globes today! This is a fairly short unit and we should finish next week.
We are just about done doing our When I Grow Up books! Super excited for these future published authors.

Happy March!! Thank you so much for taking the time this week to come in and talk about all of the growth we have made this year. I feel very lucky to have such wonderful kiddos (and parents!) in this classroom!🥰 It was also so lovely to see some of you at the auction last Saturday - I appreciate y'all coming out to support our school!

We are getting our When I Grow Up final drafts finished!! I am meeting with some kiddos as a small group to make sure everything looks great and while I am with those kiddos everyone else is working on a writing piece independently. These will be looked at briefly then sent home.
Speaking of our When I Grow Up Book - the order form that you received if you could get those back to me ASAP and no later than March 15 (next Friday) if you are wanting to purchase a book! This helps me as I have to enter in who is getting books - ordering online versus through check is also a lot easier as well! If you do order online, the company still would like a form filled out - just indicate you ordered online and write the code it gives you! Thank you!!
We are finishing up Patterns in the Sky and then we will do a lesson over Maps and Globes!

Wow! I can't believe it is already March!! We had SUCH A BLAST today becoming secret agents and trying to rescue the missing Zero the Hero!! We found out this morning that Zero the Hero went missing and that if we didn't find him, we would be repeating the 119th day of school over...and over...and over again! Throughout the day we solved missions such as counting to 120, counting tens and ones, learning about finger prints! Making ten, minute to win it games, and building a sturdy structure with cups. At each station they earned a clue word that would help us find Zero the Hero. Thanks to our amazing parents AND paras (they helped with prepping all of the 1st grade teachers for this day - its a BIG one!) we were able to successfully rescue Zero the Hero! See below for a TON of fun pictures!!

Next week in math we will be doing lessons 5-7 which will be using an open number line to add within 100, decompose to add on an open number line, and regroup to add!! As you receive exit tickets in your kiddo's green folder these are GREAT resources for you to check in to see how your kiddo is doing (really anything that is marked in their green folder). If you notice that they may get something wrong, you can use those sheets to come up with your own problems and do a little bit more practice at home. Even just 1 or 2 a day could make a difference!!
We are still working on our When I Grow Up pages for our book - apologies I have not sent home the order form, I will hand those out at conferences. I am going to have kiddos work independently on a separate piece of writing while I meet with a group of 4-5 students to work more one-on-one with them for this project.
Electronic & PJ Day will be Wednesday, March 4th!
Your kiddo can bring one electronic to school. They are responsible for this item, and it must stay in their backpack at all times. They can use it at the end of the day.
School appropriate games only.
If your kiddo does not bring an electronic that is okay, they can use their school laptop.
Wear PJs this day!
🌼🍎Spring Conferences are next week!🍎🌼
Please double check your date and time!
Conferences will run for 20 minutes.
If you cannot make it, please reach out to me. I appreciate it!!
Kindness allows everyone to feel included, supported, and valued. Showing kindness creates a caring school community where everyone can thrive and feel happy. Zane exemplifies this each and everyday - not just to his peers but to his teachers & paras as well. Awesome job Zane!!

Wow!! Time is flying by, I can't believe it is already February! With that being said, I want to start this weekly letter off by saying thank you so much for being patient with me! Also, shoutout to those who chaperoned for our Science Musuem field trip, we had a lot of fun!!
Next week's spelling words follows the 'ay' spelling pattern where it makes a long /a/ sound. We will also have two words where we learn to drop the y, add i, then add -er or -est to the end of a word. Along with memory words! Please know, we pass out Valentine's in the morning so that it is out of the way for the party🤪
Please have your kiddo's bag or box done and brought in that morning!
Again, if you are giving our Valentines, please make sure it is just signed FROM your kiddo - not addressed to any specific names to the other kids in class. Having it just signed from themselves helps us pass it out in a circle which makes it more efficient.
If you would like to join the party from 1:45-2:30 please do!!

We ask that if your kiddo is bringing a valentine, that they only sign it from themselves. This helps make the flow of passing out cards quicker and easier.
Please make your own box or bag by the Valentine's Day party - we will be passing out Valentine's during the school day before the party on that day.
Electronic Day: the kiddos have filled up their jar again!!
They voted on electronic day. This will happen on Thursday, February 26th.
Your kiddo is allowed to bring one electronic of their choosing to school. They will be responsible for their device.
If your kiddo does not bring an electronic - no worries! They will get to use their school laptop!
For January we have been talking about our school's word of the month: Determination. Determination encourages students to keep trying, even when learning gets tough. Determination allows students to build confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and learn that hard work leads to success. Zoe is Student of the Month for January for showcasing what it truly means to be determined!

Hi everyone - happy Friday!!
Next week our spelling pattern follows memory words and irregular contractions. These irregular contracted words are formed differently than the other contracted words. Cannot → can’t: drop the last n and o to replace it with an apostrophe. Will not → won’t: The letters i, l, and l in will are changed to ‘o’ in the contraction won’t. Do not → don’t. The spelling of 'do' does not change in the contraction, but the ‘o’ changes from long vowel /u/ to a long vowel /o/ sound.

We will be having a reteach week next week in math, learning more about the Earth, moon, stars, and sun, and writing a personal narrative on our own!
Valentine's day is coming up! I would like to tell your sooner rather than later so you can start making your Valentine's day boxes/bags! We will be having our party on Thursday Febraury 12th! If you are able to give Valentine's to our students, please just have your kiddo sign it from themselves - we ask you not to address to each kiddo in the class - this way will help us pass out Valentine's smoother and quicker. We have 21 kiddos in our classroom💖🥰
Dear 1st Grade Families,
Our school auction is coming up soon, and the 1st Grade class is excited to contribute a themed auction wagon this year!
Our theme is: “Jet, Set, Go!”
This wagon will be filled with fun and practical items for trips near and far—think travel essentials, adventure gear, and items that make traveling easier and more enjoyable.
We’ve created a SignUpGenius where you can select an item (or items) to donate toward our wagon. Any contribution—big or small—is greatly appreciated and helps make our auction a success. First Grade: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/508054CA8AB2FA3F58-60264756-copy

We started Unit 7: Meanings of Addition and you should have received a parent letter going into detail about this unit in your kiddo's green folder on Tuesday. We will finish up on Tuesday, review Wednesday, and test Thursday.
This week in writing, we wrote together our opinion about winter! Next week, students will state their opinion on if they think driving would be fun or not and give three reasons to support their opinion. This opinion piece will be done on their own.
In social studies we have been going over expectations again and we have chosen a word to embrace this year! Next week we will finish our writing piece over the word we are embracing so we can hang it out in the hallway and learn about Martin Luther King Jr.!
Grades were posted on Thursday. To view them, they are in Infinite Campus.
We will be going to the science museum on Thursday, February 5th. I will need 5 chaperones. If you would like to volunteer please sign up below. All month we have been talking about what it means to show respect not only towards others but towards ourselves as well! Being respectful helps others feel valued, heard, and safe. Showing respect to peers, teachers, school rules, and ourselves allows us to create a positive and welcoming environment where everyone can learn and grow. Verity was chosen for Student of the Month for December for showcasing these qualities!

We finished unit 6 shapes and solids today! Unit 6's extra practice pages are in green folders. We will review on Monday and test on Tuesday! The rest of the week will be a reteach on what we've learned so far!
Most of us are done with our informative books and moving onto researching a new topic and transferring all of our information we learned onto a poster!
This week we learned about Chinese New Year and Hanukkah! Next week we will finish our travels by traveling to Mexico (Mrs. McNicholas' class) and learn about Las Posadas!
Reward next Thursday 12/18
The kids have filled up their reward jar! After sharing and voting on ideas, the winning choice for our celebration is Electronic Day💻🎉
Students may bring one electronic device from home; such as a tablet, iPad, laptop, or Nintendo Switch only with parent/guardian permission.
To help this run smoothly, please note:
Students are responsible for their own devices.
Devices will stay safely in backpacks until it is time for our reward. Just as with any item brought from home, there is always a small risk of it being misplaced or damaged.
Please talk with your child about taking good care of their device throughout the day.
Games should be school-appropriate.
No violent games or games involving violent weapons, please.
If your child does not bring a device, no worries at all, they will be able to use their school laptop. 🥰
Thank you for your support in helping our celebration be safe and fun! Let me know if you have any questions.

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving, enjoyed our first snow, and had a great first week getting back into the groove of everything!!
Next week's spelling words follow e + ed/ing ending + memory words. We will be talking about how the silent e is no longer needed once we add an ending, because the ending begins with a vowel. This helps keep the word spelled correctly while the base word still keeps its original sound. The silent e usually works as a signal that the vowel in the middle of the word should say its long sound (like the a in make). When we add an ending that starts with a vowel (like -ed or -ing), that ending now helps connect the sounds smoothly. Because the vowel ending already does the “job” of helping the word flow, we don’t need the silent e anymore so we drop it. This keeps the vowel sound in the base word the same and prevents odd spellings like makeing or hopeing.

We did it! Happy Thanksgiving Break! I am so thankful to have each and everyone of your kiddos in this classroom - I feel very blessed to be able to be their teacher and teach them new things!! I am also thankful for all of the support, love, and care all of you bring to our classroom as well. With whatever you are doing this break, I hope it is filled with safe travels and lots of memories filled with love and laughter💗 Please note we have iReady testing right when we get back from break and it will be on reading. Please let me know if your kiddo will not be here.
The spelling words we will do when we get back from break follow the silent e, magic e, mommy e, etc. pattern with adding -s to the end of the word!

We finished our math test and those are coming home today!! When we get back, we will do a little review on number patterns and counting backwards and then we will start our Unit 6 - shapes and solids.
We are going to hit informational writing again. This time students can use Pebble Go to choose whatever topic they'd like to do more research on.
Then, we are switching over to social studies to do our Holidays Around the World unit where we will learn about Christmas, Diwali, Hanukah, Eid al fitr, Chinese New Year, and Las Posadas. This is such a fun unit because the kiddos get to travel to each classroom with DIY suitcases and passports and learn about a new holiday for two days and move onto the next classroom!!
It is so hard to choose just one student for Student of the Month because all of these kiddos are awesome!! For the month of November, we have been learning and talking about how to show empathy. Leo was chosen for representing our word of the month!! Leo helps others and cares about how others feel. Leo constantly shows this everyday through his relationships with his peers, has helped reduce conflict, and is always finding ways to create a kinder, more inclusive environment from just being himself!! Way to go Leo!

Hi everyone!! I hope you all had a wonderful week! Thank you to all the chaperones and parents who came to the zoo with us!! It turned out to be such a beautiful day! Scroll down for a few photos!
Next week's spelling words we start looking at 'magic e', 'mommy e', 'silent e', etc. (whatever you may call it!) With e at the end of the word, it is silent but turns the short vowel to a long vowel. We will be practicing reading a CVC word with the short vowel and what happens when we add an e. EX: bit --> bite, mad --> made, kit --> kite. Plus memory words!

This week in math we learned how to subtract using near doubles, doubles, adding, and fact families! Next week we will finish our unit! We will find an unknown number in a subtraction equation and determine if subtraction equations are set up next to each other are true. We will test on Thursday.
Lots of notes this week!
We will be having lunch bunch with Mrs. Reinert on Monday 11/17!
The book fair starts next week! We will be going Monday morning to make our wishlists. After that, you may go with your student before or after school. I do let kids go during the school day it just depends on if they have finished their work and if there is free time to go!
We started addressing grandparent letters today! Thank you to those who came to help, it means a lot to us!! As I am writing this, I still have some kiddos that still need to address envelopes. I plan to do this after they get back from specials so check your child's folder! The plan is that everyone takes theirs home today - if not be on the look out for it next week!
Please mail your letter out before Thanksgiving. This ensures enough time to read it before Winter Break and during our Holidays Around the World unit!
As stated on the form, we are only putting two grandparent letters in a envelope. If you have more than one person you would like to send it to I am sending home one additional copy that you can make your own copy and mail it out on your own.
It's that time of year!! I have noticed a lot of kiddos complain about their hands hurting and they are pretty dry. Please know you are more than welcome to send your kiddo with non-scented lotion to have in their backpacks to help with this. This helps lessen traffic to the nurse. Thank you!!
The kiddos filled up their reward jar!! On Friday 11/21 they have earned a stuffy, movie, and PJ day. Kiddos can wear their PJs if they would like (slippers fine as long as they have extra shoes to change into) and they can bring a stuffy!! Next time they fill up their reward jar, they get to suggest things and vote on what they would like to earn!
BRING 1 CHOPPED AND PEELED APPLE ON FRIDAY 11/21!!
Each year first grade makes apple sauce the day before Thanksgiving break! In order to make this happen, I need each kiddo to bring in 1-2 chopped and peeled apples on 11/21. One apple per kiddo should be enough; however, if you can/want to do two just in case thank you! I typically have 23+ kiddos in the class and we only have 21 now!

In writing we are learning to write letters. To prepare for our upcoming Holidays and Traditions Around the World unit in December, we wrote letters today to their grandparents asking them to write back and tell about their holiday traditions when they were little. For more information on this project, read the letter I sent home to you today in your kiddo's green folder. I also included a link to the letter here. I also have a link to a Google Form for you to complete with your child's grandparents name and address. There is more detail in the form explaining what we are doing / how we will do it! At school, I'll use this information to have the kids address the envelopes. I'll send the addressed envelope and letter home for you to mail. Thank you for your help with this fun letter writing activity!
Click here to complete the Google Form for their Grandparent name and address.
To help address envelops, and create a smooth process, parent volunteers are needed to help with this process! I would have you help in the pod on Wednesday 11/12 from 12:20-1:15. The goal is to finish that day, however if we don't, I will need volunteers on Friday, 11/14 from 12:20-1:00 PM. If you would like to come and help, please email me🥰
In math, we have been counting on and back on a number line to subtract and today we learned how to make a 10 to help us subtract more efficiently!

👻Happy Halloween!!👻 Thank you to everyone who helped make today so special for all the kiddos!! They had a blast!! Big shoutout to our wonderful room parents who made the classroom so cool and fun!! Thank you to those who also volunteered to help at a station, we appreciate it. We cannot do it without y'all!💖 Also, thank you for all the birthday wishes and gifts. I feel super loved🥰
Thank you to everyone who signed up to be chaperones for our zoo field trip!!! Y'all are awesome!! If you would like to join we'd love to have you (the more the merrier)! You would just have to pay for your own ticket(s) and meet us there! Date: Thursday, November 13th.
Next week's spelling words follow the same pattern as this previous week plus memory words. Rule: If a word ends in one consonant (or the last three letters are CVC) AND one vowel and the vowel is short - double the consonant before adding the ending. If it doesn't follow one of those rules, just add the ending!

Mondays we learn our new spelling pattern(s) and practice, Tuesday we do 'Musical Words' where we get a word that goes with our spelling pattern (or memory word) and walk around the room to music. When the music stops, we find the nearest classmate and we have to 1) Read our word to our partner, 2) Put our word in a sentence, and 3) Challenge ourselves by putting our word to our chest and trying to spell it without looking! If we finish all three of those things and the music hasn't started back up again, we challenge ourselves by trying to spell our partner's word. After we have done that for a couple of rounds, we go back to our tables, read our word to our table, swap words, and put our new word in a sentence! We also do memory word race on Tuesdays too!! Wednesdays we read a Superkids story and answer comprehension questions, Thursdays we do more spelling pattern review and practice before Friday, where we take our spelling test and read a Super-Duper or Super-Smart that day!!
Be on the lookout next week for the family letter that goes into great detail about Unit 5: Subtraction within 20: Facts and Strategies.
In writing we have been learning about correspondence writing!! We have been working on a fun letter in our classroom! Mrs. Barnes pulled sticks for us to give us a secret classmate. We are currently writing a letter describing what we look like and things we like to do to give hints to this secret classmate. When we are done writing this letter, Mrs. Barnes will hand out the letter to the classmate where they will read the letter to the class and try to guess who wrote their letter!🤫💕
Ask your kiddo what they know about shadows and light!! We are still investigating the mysterious big shadow in the town of Rjukan! Yesterday during science, we took a little detour break to have some fun and 'traveled' to California to have a virtual field trip to Disneyland!! We got to see all the characters and Halloween decorations, The Dapper Dans, see the different types of Halloween churros, and watch a little Halloween show over the castle!! See below for a fun picture!
For October, Wilder's word of the month was Integrity! All month we talked about how someone who exemplifies integrity, is someone who is honest, responsible, and is always doing the right thing even when no one is looking. Elena showcases this every single day in our classroom and school.
Looking ahead:

Hi everyone! I hope y'all had a nice long weekend!!
Spelling words next week will be to add -ed or -ing at the end of a word and also be able to know when you should double a consonant before adding those endings. If a word has one vowel, then one consonant at the end, and the vowel is short, we double the consonant before adding -ed or -ing. You can also think if the last three letters are CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) you will double it before adding the ending. EX: hug --> hugging. Hug is a CVC word, it has one vowel that is short and ends in one consonant so you would double the g. For look --> looked. Look is a CVVC word, the last three letters are not CVC it is VVC, so you would not double the k. We will have a spelling test next week!

We will be practicing how to do this all next week.
We took our unit 4 math test today - I will hand those back out sometime next week! So be on the lookout in their green folders. Next week we will be reviewing for our first benchmark!
In science we are investigating shadows. Understanding that a shadow is created by an object blocking a light source and light can only travel in a straight line! We will continue to investigate shadows to figure out how to bring light to the town of Rjukan!
PLEASE CHECK GREEN FOLDERS EVERYDAY!
I do not send out emails on things being sent home, unless it is something important. I have noticed green folders being really full. Please take the time each day to look through your kiddo's green folder and empty them. Thank you!
**only 5 chaperones**
Yes, if all slots are filled up, and you would like to come - yes! The more the merrier. You would just have to pay for your own ticket and meet us there☺️
Halloween Day + Party Info:
We will be having a costume parade at 1:15. Please send your kiddo with their costume in a bag!! This helps track their clothes - send your kiddo to school with regular clothes!!! We will change into our costumes before the parade! Please be mindful of your kiddo's costume, we do not allow any fake/pretend weapons to school. Masks are fine, however they will not be allowed to wear it until the parade. We will be having our Halloween party from 1:45-2:30 PM. You are welcomed to come join us!!💖👻

Happy Wednesday & long weekend to you!
It has been lovely getting to meet with all of you to talk about your kiddo! I look forward to meeting with more of you tomorrow!!
Next week's spelling words follow the -ed spelling pattern again; however, this time it will make a /d/ or /t/ sounds. Kiddos will need to be able to know that when they hear /d/ or /t/ that it is actually ed! We will also be going over more memory words!

Next week we will be reviewing in math! Today, you should have received our Unit 4 workbook pages (optional) if you would like some extra practice over this long weekend! We will either test Thursday or Friday!
Next week in writing, students will be working on narrative writing again; however, this time they will need to be more descriptive by adding adjectives and verbs. The topic will be to write about, 'A Day Spent Outside.'
In science we have started a unit called Shadow Town. The unit focuses on the town of Rjukan, Norway, which spends half the year with no direct sunlight. Over the course of the module, students explore light, shadows, transparency, and reflection.

I hope you all have the best weekend,
Krista Barnes
Happy Friday everyone!
Spelling words next week follow -er and -ed endings. The -er sound is controlled by the r and loves to make an /er/ sound! We imagine er riding in a car as they slam on the breaks they make the errrrrr sound! For ed, ed can make a couple of different sounds (/d/, /t/, and /id/). This week, ed makes an /id/ or just a /d/ sound! Even though there will be no spelling test next week, please practice at home!😌

Wow! Where has the time gone?! I can't believe we are heading into October next week!👻🎃
Before we dive into a little brief snippet of our week, this is a reminder that I will be sending out an email for our Fall Conference sign up genius tomorrow at noon - so set a reminder or an alarm as it is first come!!
Spelling words for next week follow digraph /ng/ which makes a /ŋ/ sound!

Here are a couple of videos:
Superkids we continue to dive into digraphs to map out, blend, decode, and encode words! We have also been reading stories from our Superkids books and answering comprehension questions!
In math we finished unit 3! We took our test on Tuesday. I will be holding onto these tests and will be showing them at fall conferences. On Wednesday, I also sent home the unit 3 worksheets if you wanted more practice at home! Another thing that went home this week was the family letter explaining what we will be doing in Unit 4! We started Unit 4 today and we will be doing unit 4 the whole month of October! Unit 4 is addition within 20 where we will learn tons of facts and strategies to add!
This class loves to write! Whenever we get together to write they are such hard workers!! We just finished our informational writing - kiddos got to go on their laptop, browse on Pebble Go, and choose an animal they would like to write about. It has been fun seeing what they choose! I will be collecting and keeping this writing piece along with their opinion writing (starting next week) to show at conferences. Next week we will dive into opinion writing! We will be writing an opinion piece together about recess next week, then the following week I will choose a topic for them to write independently on. That piece will be the piece I share with you at conferences.
10/3: Fun Run Next Friday!
Next Friday is our Fun Run! I am pre-writing this letter so you may have had a t-shirt come home today, if not definitely next week and I will send an email out! Our fun run happens during our specials - 1:05-1:50 PM.
If you would like to volunteer - I could use 2-3 people to come and help me pin numbers onto the kiddos shirts and take them off after! I believe I would probably have you come in around 12:40 to start pinning some shirts and getting them ready. If you would like to come in and help please shoot me an email!

Hello everyone! I am so happy we are starting to see cooler weather!! The fall and winter months are always so fun!!
To help keep dismissal safe and smooth for all students, I kindly ask that you let me know any time your child’s dismissal plan is different from their usual routine. Please send me an email if:
Your child will be going home a different way than what you shared at the beginning of the year.
If there is a bus cancellation (I usually get emails); however, an email from you and a reminder on how you will pick them up would be helpful!
A new person/friend is picking them up/or they are going home with a different friend/person that is different than their typical dismissal routine.
When dismissal changes, I will follow what you’ve communicated most recently. This helps me ensure your child gets home safely and prevents confusion at the end of the day. Thank you so much for helping me make dismissal smooth and safe for everyone!
Here are your next week's spelling words! They follow the spelling pattern of digraph /th/! Digraphs are two letters that make one sound!

This week we finished up unit 3, place value! This week we talked more on how to show numbers in different ways (EX: 62 has 6 tens and 2 ones, but we can also say 5 tens and 12 ones, etc.). We also started to compare numbers. One way we learned is to look at our tens place first - if we are comparing the numbers 62 and 83, we would see 6 tens v. 8 tens and know that 6 < 8 so 62 < 83. If the numbers in the tens place is different, we knew that we did not need to move onto our ones place. However, if we were comparing 87 and 85, we would notice that in our tens place they both have an 8, that is when we would know to move onto the ones place and see that 7 > 5, so 87 > 85. We also compared numbers on number lines! Number lines are another great tool to use in math. When comparing numbers on a number line, we circle our two numbers. If we circled 43 and 74 we would see that 74 is to the right of 43 and so 43 < 74 / 74 > 43! Next week we will review on Monday and test on Tuesday!
In writing we created a book about cheetahs!! We all worked on this together!! On Friday, we all got our laptops out and got to use Pebble Go to choose our own animal to write about and started writing an opening sentence, 3 facts, and a closing sentence on our graphic organizer! Next week, we will continue to independently do our informational writing. Heads up: some writing pieces will stay with me to show you during fall / spring conferences and some will go home!
In science, you may have seen a drawing of a weird creature that came home on Thursday! This week in science, we drew our own creature (or an animal that exists and gave it new features) and explained one body part that helps them survive! We did a final draft which is hanging up next to our classroom! Next week we will continue our animal reporters unit and be observing how parents are alike and different than their young.
For the next 3 weeks I will be including the following in my weekly letter:

Happy Friday and Happy September!! In case you missed the email with a couple of my wedding photos they're above - it was the best weekend ever and I am very appreciative of everyone wishing us greatness! Plus, the flexibility in which I was sick the Friday I was supposed to be back. Thank you!!
It was a great week back and we worked SO very hard!! I continue to be impressed by this group's hard work + team work amongst each other. Before I left for the wedding, the kiddos filled up their reward jar so we will be doing another movie & stuffy day next Friday, September 19th! PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDDO IN PJS, THE DAY WE HAVE THE REWARD IS FALL PICTURE DAY. ONLY STUFFIES! Heads up, they are a couple of flowers away from filling up ANOTHER one - I told them if that happens before Friday, they will get a reward on top of that one and it will be special snack. I will send an email out if this happens. We will do this same reward up until November. Come November, students can suggest what their reward will be and the class gets to vote!
Spelling words next week follow /wh/ question words (these are memory words) along with digraph /sh/ with some blends!
Where
What
Why
When
Which
Who
Cash
Dash
Crash
Trash
This week in writing, we finished our personal narrative (a true story about ourslves) and worked so hard that we got to share our stories with everyone! Next week we will start informational writing. Next week we will write the same story all together, then the week of the 22nd, students will get to choose their own animal to write and inform others on.
In math we started Unit 3 place value! We have been learning that there are many different ways/tools to represent a number. We can do this by drawing tens and ones, using unifex cubes to represent numbers, place value charts, and even in written form (EX: 5 tens and 8 ones is 58!). We have also been working on noticing and identifying groups of tens. See below for pictures of our hard work! Next week we will continue our place value unit! TBD on unit 3 math test, with reteaching/scheduling's, I am aiming to review Unit 3 Wednesday, September 24th and testing Thursday, September 25th. I will keep you in the loop!!
In science, we are continuing to be animal reporters and learning so much about how animals use their body parts to help them survive!!
Going home in folders today:
Unit 2 practice pages - these are not mandatory. I will take worksheets out of our math workbook when we have finished a unit and send them home. We do not do homework, so again, these are not mandatory! These are just for you to use to your descretion and if you want your kiddo to have extra practice!
Today's spelling test - please remember if your kiddo was absent/not here during this time, I do not makeup spelling tests (so if your kiddo doesn't bring one home, that's why!)
Lesson 4's math exit ticket
There may be tons of extra papers (unmarked) going home today. Every Friday we empty our red folders (early finisher folder) - since I have been gone it has not been emptied in a while!🤪
Looking ahead:
Tuesday 9/16: Sub all day - Mrs. Barnes Mandatory Math Professional Development
Friday 9/19: Fall Picture Day (10:30-11:00)

Hi everyone, I will make this short and sweet! I have sent home a new spelling list to practice - we will have our unit 1 week 1 spelling test and unit 2 math test Friday 9/5 when I return!
Next week's spelling words follow the spelling pattern: Digraph CH - digraphs are two letters that make one sound! Here are the words:
1. lunch
2. bunch
3. inch
4. pinch
5. ranch
6. branch
7. chip
8. chop
9. chick
10. check
Next week students will practice digraph ch, continue reviewing number patterns all the way to 120, and write complete sentences.

Krista Barnes 🥰
Happy Friday everyone!
Today we had our first class reward of PJ, stuffy, and movie day! The kiddos really worked hard and showed great leadership skills to fill up our jar. So much so - that they are already halfway full of their second class reward jar😍🤪 It feels like they have been first graders for a month rather than a week and a half!! I am so proud of the hard work and positive attitudes this early in the school year!
This week we were working our math brains so hard with place value and number patterns! We continued to identify tens and ones in a two-digit number, along with drawing base ten blocks to represent a number. We learned that when counting forward the ones go up by one and when we reach 9, we go back to 0 and our tens place goes up by 1! Even though it was tricky for us, we kept perservering and learned how to count backwards! The same rule applies just backwards! When counting back, we learned that whenever we reach 0, the ones place goes back to 9 and our tens place goes down by 1! We even challenged ourselves and filled in missing numbers with three digit numbers!! Unit 1 is great, because it is a buffer for Unit 2. Unit 2 is the exact same thing we learned in Unit 1 - just more in depth. With receiving this new curriculum last year, we realized Unit 2 was a doozy and really hard for kiddos. So we decided to add onto our Unit 1 and touch base with all the things we will learn in Unit 2 to help get our brains ready!
We took our Unit 1 math test! I will hold onto these so I can talk about the results with the first grade team during our PLC. I have the goal of sending them home next Wednesday/Thursday before I take off!
You should ask your kiddo to tell you what a subject and predicate are because we are nearly experts in that!! In writing, we have been talking about what makes a complete sentence and looking at incomplete sentences to fix mistakes! We will continue this next week so that when we begin writing, we are amazing authors because we know what makes a complete sentence!
In Superkids we have been decoding words with short vowel patterns and manipulating the middle sounds of words! For instance, we got our whiteboards out and I had them spell 'pet' then I would say, "Now change the /e/ sound to an /a/ sound." Students knew to erase the e and change it to an a to change the word pet to pat! Next week, we will continue to go over short vowels and finish our review unit!
Things to know:
Superkids shorts: each Monday we read a Superkids short. These are the Superkids stories on a colored paper. These are quick passages that go over spelling patterns we are currently learning. These are great little passages for your kiddo to read to get familiar with reading different spelling patterns! I tell them to try and read it 3 times a day! You can read it while you're eating a snack, at the dinner table to your family, and at night before bed!
I have been getting a lot of questions about the behavior chart in your kiddo's green folder. On my 'Back to School Night' slides it is under the slide that talks about the Paws'itive Behavior Log. In the past, I have tried to at the end of the day have students sit down and reflect on their own at school; however, since our day is so jam-packed I will leave this up to you! It is not mandatory, it is just a way for kiddos to reflect on how their day went. Green - they had a great day, yellow - could have been better, red - not great. You can have conversations on why it was great and even why it wasn't. Again, this is not mandatory!
If there are any behavior incidents in school that needed attention, the kiddo and I will fill out a 'Think It Sheet' (also in my B2SN slides), have a one-on-one conversation, and I will email you to check your kiddo's folder for the 'Think It Sheet'.
Fall Enrichment classes are going to start the week of September 22! In the email sent to you for this weekly letter, I have attached a PDF with details!
If you see a lot of papers come home, each Friday we empty our red folders. Please see the B2SN slides for more details on what red folders are!
Link to Back to School Night Slides (after this letter, please refer to my website - it will be there!)
Looking ahead:
8/29 - 9/4: Sub - Mrs. Barnes Out - Getting Married - YAY!!!
9/1: Labor Day - NO SCHOOL
Monday 8/25: Music
Tuesday 8/26: Music
Wednesday 8/27: P.E.
Thursday 8/28: P.E. / 1st Spelling Test / SEL Lesson from Mrs. Hauser

Next week I will be sending my weekly letter out either Wednesday or Thursday! Have a great weekend!✨
Krista Barnes 🥰
We did it! We've completed our first week of school!! We had such a fun week and I am so excited for this school year - we have such a great group of kiddos!!🥰💜✨ They have been so great, that our class reward jar is already a little over halfway full. We may be getting our first class reward next Friday!🤪😂
Each week I will be sending out a weekly letter each Friday! Some may be long and some may be short; however, it is important for you to read through all of them so you are up to date about what we are learning in class, upcoming events, tests, important information, and so much more!!
**please make sure you look at the Back to School Night slides that will be posted below**
This week we got to know each other and write about what we did over the summer! We learned a lot about classroom routines and expectations and even began learning about place value in math! In Superkids we are reviewing letter names and sounds.
Next week, we will continue to learn about place value in math, with a reteach on Wednesday, and assessment on Friday. Be on the lookout for some exit tickets next week. More explanation on exit tickets in my back to school night slides.
Next week in writing we will be going over sentence structures and learning that a sentence has a subject and a predicate. This will help us gain practice and become amazing authors who write complete sentences!
In Superkids we will continue to review letter names and sounds, decoding short vowels, reading, and vocabulary!
Due to my wedding weekend, I will be heading up to the mountains on Thursday, August 28th and will not be here to hold a 'Back to School Night' like I do every year. I apologize that I will not be here; however, I made detailed slides on everything I would say if I was having a Back to School Night. Please click the link below to review these (many) slides. I am sending them out early so that if you have any questions about anything - or questions I did not go over - I can help answer them 💖 I know they are long, but please take the time to read all of the slides as they are very important.
These slides will also be posted on my website for you to refer back to all year.
Important info:
Headphones are needed next week because we are starting iReady testing. Be on the lookout for an email if we do not have headphones for your kiddo.
Wallets - we use 'wallets' in 1st grade to hold our Barnes Bucks that we earn. They look like till bags (you can google till bags and click images to see). Or, you can bring another pencil bag for them to put it in. I will also be sending out emails to those that need a wallet.
Please practice your lunch number at home. This helps run the lunch line move more efficiently.
