Hello First Grade Families!

I can’t believe it’s already February. Where did January go?

I love the second semester of first grade because the kids just take off. They’re reading and writing more and better. They’re understanding numbers and how to put them together and take them apart.

In February we’ll continue to learn long vowel patterns such as vowel teams. We will also be learning the rules of “y” at the end of a word.

In math we’ll continue working on adding and subtracting in story problems and learning new strategies.

The best thing you can do for your child right now is to be reading with them. They should be reading the “super short” story they receive every Monday to you each night of the week. This should take 5 minutes or less and make a big difference. This will support their fluency, the spelling/reading pattern of the week, and reviewing past patterns.

Upcoming events in February/March:

2/14

Valentine's Day Activities (afternoon)

2/18

No school for students (teacher work day)

2/21

3/1-3/3

Parent Teacher Conference Week

3/3-3/4

No School P/T Conf Week

3/21-3/25

We look forward to parent/teacher conferences in the beginning of March. I will be sending out a sign-up genius mid-February to sign up for your time. If you have any questions or concerns beforehand please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thank you,

Suzy DeStefano

**Valentine’s Day! I sent home a letter in your child’s orange folder. Please read it and let me know if you have any questions. Your child is to make a valentine’s box/bag and bring it to school. We will vote on the funniest, prettiest, and most creative box/bag! If you want to participate (you do NOT have to) please bring a card for each child in the class. The class list is on the back of the paper. If you need a box or some fun paper for your child to decorate with PLEASE let me know and I will be happy to help!

First Grade November

Newsletter 2021

Dear Parents,

The holiday season is upon us! Halloween was a great success! Thank you for waving and cheering us on in our parade. Did your child tell you they counted almost 600 seeds in our pumpkin? Also, Thanks again to everyone for a great conference week as well!

In science, we are in the middle of our new unit on plants. Your child should be able to tell you all the parts of a plant and how seeds are dispersed (they learned that awesome word)!

In writing, we will continue to focus on personal narratives. We have been teaching conventions, including punctuation, revising and editing. The students will be learning more memory words and be taking tests to reinforce their spelling. The kids will start accurately spelling words that are 1st grade appropriate. We are still encouraging phonemic spelling(temporary spellings).

In reading, we are working on understanding plot, sequencing, and cause and effect. Our small groups are going along smoothly and everyone is making progress in their group. In phonics we are working on endings (-er and -ed). Please review these at home and keep reading every day to and with your child.

In math, we are focusing on adding and subtracting within 20. We are building the understanding of place value with 10’s and ones. We are solving addition and subtraction word problems using numbers, pictures and words. Later on this month, we will be working with the number line to add and subtract and solve word problems.
