Miss Giddens’ Third Grade Classroom

Have you ever heard of Blackbeard the pirate? Blackbeard is one of the most famous pirates in history. In the golden age of piracy, around the 1700s, Blackbeard and his crew attacked settlements and ships all along the Caribbean coast and sea. People recognized him immediately, and he became one of the most feared pirates in all the sea. They would board other ships and steal all of their gold, jewels, coins, and food. Some people surrendered as soon as they saw him because they were scared of the cannons on his ship. Blackbeard is still famous today. You can read about him in books, see him in movies, video games, and even amusement parks.

Trains, also known as locomotives, have been a popular form of transportation since the early 1800s. Since their creation trains have been transporting both passengers and goods. Trains gained popularity quickly as they were a cheap way to travel. People who had never traveled before were now happy and able to see new places. Today, freight trains are used daily to move materials across the country. Likewise, people all over the world ride on high speed trains to go to different cities and countries. Railroads are an important part of today’s society.

Kan-Jam is a fun Frisbee based game to play outside with friends and family. To play Kan-Jam make two teams of two people. Set the two black plastic garbage can shaped goals directly across from each other 20 feet apart. People love this easy to learn, fast pace game. Have fun laughing and throwing while you compete to throw the disc through the slit on the cans. Whether you're at the beach, a picnic, party, or backyard barbecue, Kan-Jam is the perfect outdoor party game.

One of the most interesting trees of the rainforest is the ficus tree. Ficus trees are different from regular trees because their seeds begin growing on branches of other existing trees. Birds of the rainforest will digest and then poop out the ficus tree seeds onto branches. From there the seed sprouts roots. The roots go both downward towards the ground and upward, wrapping their roots around every part of the tree. Over many years the ficus tree will strangle and kill the original tree by taking all of the sunlight and water. After the original tree dies it slowly decays and rots away over time. You are left with an incredible tree that has a hollow trunk and twisting branches.

Does jumping off cliffs and rappelling down waterfalls sound fun? Millions of people around the world love to go canyoning. It's a thrilling adventure you can experience in places like Costa Rica, USA, Africa, and Switzerland. Waterfalls range in height from 50 feet up to 250 feet. If you're brave enough to try it you'll wear a safety helmet and harness. You arealways connected to a rope to make sure that you arrive safely at the bottom of the waterfall. One of the most exciting parts of repelling is when you jump down the waterfall.

Board games are an entertaining and fun pastime that people have played for centuries. Archaeologists have found ancient board games from the Egyptians, Chinese, and Greek. One of the oldest known games is the Egyptian game called Senet. They found it in a tomb dated back to 3,200 BC. Early Americans played checkers and card games for fun in the1800s. Since then games of luck, chance, and strategy have been developed and loved by people all of the world. Today we enjoy games such as Monopoly, Settlers of Catan, and Scrabble.

We all see animals everyday, but there’s more to animals than meets the eye. Did you know that a tarantula spider can survive for more than two years without food? There is a butterfly in Africa with enough poison in its body to kill six cats. In addition, ants never sleep and they don’t have lungs to breath. Lastly, Giraffe’s have 20 inch long tongues! There’s always something new to learn about animals.
