Our class library is full of diverse and relatable texts as well as those that open students' eyes to the world around them, both near and far. My classroom is a print-rich environment, and a robust classroom library allows me to continue to offer new titles at a variety of reading levels that are engaging and entertaining while also being educational. Reading is a way to provide access to characters, knowledge and lessons that many students may not get elsewhere. Read alouds are an important component of my lessons. I find that picture books are a great way for students to access grade-level concepts in the areas of science and social studies. They can be used as mentor texts for writing, critical thinking and literary elements. And they can also teach important character qualities in order to create students of quality character. These books not only promote a furthered love of reading but also kindness, compassion, empathy, sharing, inclusion and acceptance.

Reading pictures IS reading!
