Spelling and Root Words
Weekly Spelling Units
We will do a weekly spelling unit on Wednesdays, and you will be tested on your spelling words the following week. Spelling units comprise of spelling words, commonly confused words, academic vocabulary, and Latin and Greek roots.
Root Words
You will need four flashcards each week for your root words. You will be tested on your knowledge of Greek and Latin roots four times throughout the year. Those tests are cumulative! That means that each time you are tested you are assessed on previously learned roots too! You will have a roots test for units 1 - 8 (32 roots), units 1 - 16 (64 roots), units 1 - 20 (80 roots) and units 1 - 26 (104 roots). LEARN YOUR ROOTS WELL EACH WEEK! Don’t try to cram the night before! You may be asking, why? Why do I need to know my roots? Well, when you learn your roots it's POWERFUL! You will be able (pretty much) to define any new word simply by your knowledge of roots. Invaluable in life....particularly on an exam! And by the way, root knowledge is useful in ANY academic subject!
