Independent Reading

"Read every day and live a better life"

Independent reading is under way! Students are reading many books independently this year, both in class and at home. Please see the attachment for my 7th grade independent reading requirements. A copy of this letter was sent home with students at the beginning of the school year.

In a nutshell, my reading requirements are:

Daily reading for 20 minutes. This is SO important!

Book talks. Students share out in small groups the stories they have been reading.

Quarterly genre focus book reviews. Students are required to read books from various genres. Each quarter they will write about a specific genre. They are:

Quarter 1: Fantasy or science fiction (due October 2, 2019)

Quarter 2: Realistic fiction or historical fiction (due December 11, 2019)

Quarter 3: Classic or traditional literature (due March 4, 2020)

Quarter 4: Biography, autobiography, or memoir (due May 20, 2020)

Have a parent sign up, and then connect to me, Mrs. Ibbitson, by typing in this code: LTM4P (Don’t forget to bookmark the site!) You can either order online (preferable), or you can fill out the order form and bring it to me (Mrs. Ibbitson) with a check or cash.

Every once in a while, I take my 7th graders to our school media center to check out books. So that you are not searching aimlessly, you can actually research the books online before you go. To do this, log on to your LosAl account. Click on the “Follett/Destiny” app and select “Oak Middle School Media Center.” At the very top of the page in the blue banner, select “catalog.” Now you can search our media center to see if the book you are interested in is in our inventory.
