Behavior Expectations

P.B.I.S. (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports)

PBIS is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional and academic success.

Penryn School's reputation is reflected by students’ behavior in the classroom, on the playground, in assemblies, at athletic events, and on field trips. The Penryn School Expectations, presented as the 3 B's, was developed to serve as a general guide for students to maintain high standards of behavior.

What is Panther Pride at Penryn School?

Panther Pride is the a school-wide behavior system, created using PBIS, or Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. This school-wide system focuses on rewarding students for the positive behavior, but also having a plan for any negative behavior that might occur. The most important part of the school-wide system is keeping expectations clear in all scenarios.

Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe

The school-wide behavior plan is carefully designed to protect all children and to establish an orderly learning environment for all students. The school staff will teach and encourage appropriate behavior and will assist each student in correcting inappropriate behavior. Parents can assist by reviewing the behavior policies and by supporting school personnel should a behavior problem arise.

The management of each individual classroom is the responsibility of the classroom teacher. It is the teacher’s responsibility to insure that the classroom environment is conducive to learning. The specific details of how this is to be managed are left to the professional judgment of the teacher. There are several broad guidelines that the teachers are to follow:

1. All classroom rules need to be posted in the room.

2. At the first of the year teachers will review classroom rules and procedures throughout the year.

3. The teacher is to inform the student and notify the parent if the student is having persistent behavior problems in class.

4. Extreme disruptions could result in an immediate office referral without parent notification.

For students in grades K-8, the classroom teacher will handle routine discipline issues through their classroom management system along with the Merit System that was developed with PBIS and, when needed, the support of the administrative staff.
