Protecting the Penguins

Task :

Penguin eggs are becoming too weak to hatch due to the rising hot temperatures, and their species is becoming more endangered as time goes on. So we have taken it into our hands to build penguins dwellings to stay cool and lay there eggs. The task that we must complete as a resemble of this real word problem is to make a dwelling to hold an ice cube shaped penguin.

Criteria :

The Criteria is to try to minimize ice loss from the penguin ice cube.

Constraints:

The Constraints of this task are:

First prototype

final prototype

Minimizing heat transfer :

The dwelling we made limits heat transfer such as radiation, convection, and conduction. Thermal energy, which is energy in a system that causes temperature, will be surrounding our dwellings. So my team needed to find ways to limit this thermal energy from getting in.

Radiation is heat transfer through energy waves, we limited this by applying Mylar paper to the walls that sunlight hit directly so that the sun light is reflected.

Convection is a type of heat transfer through currents, my team and I limited this heat transfer by selling close all the gaps between the walls with hot glue so currents could not go through.

Conduction is heat transfer through contact, to limit this we put multiple layers of flooring so that the heat would not be able to go through thin cardboard and melt the ice cube. As well as insulating all the walls to keep the ice cool inside

Me and my Team :

My teammate for this project was Aubrielle, we worked well together on strategizing ways to improve our dwelling and making sure we each had enough time working on it. As well as putting in our own ideas to customize it to the best extent.

I was independent on coming up with ways to insulation our dwelling and hot glued most of the pieces into place, I also stayed after school to make sure that our dwelling would be finished by the dead line.  I contributed a lot to our team and think that our hard work towards our dwelling will pay off and keep our penguin cool throughout the test.
