News paper chair

In Williams Middle School there is a chair shortage, unfortunately, leaving many kids to sit in-near broken chairs or standing all throughout class. The steam classes saw these problems and decided that we would make chairs out of recycled news paper.  We used the Engineering Design process to come up with ideas and brainstorm what would work best for our chair.  After many classes of planning a design, we started working on the chair itself.  Each group got 5 pounds of newspaper and seven meters of tape to make their chair.  Throughout the process of making  our chairs  my group used the engineering design process a lot. Here are a couple of examples of how we used it: When the chair was wobbling we put in more poles. We tested the chair by putting small amounts of pressure on it with our hands, books and heavy objects around us.  When we saw there was more weight on one side, we changed the back of the chair making it more stable. We also  made sure it could hold for 30 seconds ( that was the amount of time a person  was supposed to sit on the paper chair when we were finished ). After we had gone through building and testing our chair we made a presentation to share with the class about the process we went through . At the end, we had one person from our group demonstrating their weight on the chair for 30 seconds. When it did not break, this showed success of our chair.
