Science Fiction and Fantasy Adaptation

There are thousands of movies that are part of the science fiction and/or fantasy genre. This project will broaden your horizons a bit. Science Fiction deals with life in the future, in other galaxies, etc. It also makes sense of the latest discoveries of science and technology. Fantasy is a product of illusion and/or imagination. It can be marked as a fictional daydream.

With a partner, you will choose a film from one of the genres and then prepare a presentation covering 3 different expectations: consolidated summary and oral presentation, an album of letters and/or journal entries, and an original adaptation/alternative ending.

The consolidated summary should contain enough information from the movie that your audience has an understanding of the characters and general plot. As an audience, what do we need to know about the movie if we haven’t seen it before?

The album of letters and/or journal entries can be from one character or many characters; a minimum of 6 letters/entries are required.

The adaptation of the film can be a prequel, a sequel, a chapter of a character’s life outside of the film itself, an alternate ending, etc. You can keep all the general properties of the story the same, but the new plot line should be unique. The format of your story is entirely up to you: screenplay or play, dialogue only, or a general story.

The presentation will consume an entire class period (approximately 45 minutes). You are expected to cover all of the expectations in some way. Your presentation should be smooth and well practiced. Be sure to be aware of your time limit! Feel free to find ways to be interactive with your audience: give handouts, ask for participants, do a worksheet, etc.
