Mrs. Strub's Grade 8 Art Class is a twelve-week class that focuses on building students' understanding of the Elements and Principles of Art and how to creatively apply them in their own work. Students are challenged to express themselves visually while working on strengthening their artistic skills as they work with a variety of media. Students learn about artists that have influenced different art styles and movements as they are connected to projects introduced in class.
Graphite Portrait Drawing: The Grid Method with a Tint Value Background
The students learned about Chuck Close, who was an American Artist that used The Grid Method to Paint Photo-Realistic Portraits.
Students were challenged to create a sense of depth and space as they applied and blended a range of graphite pencils.
After the Portrait was complete, students chose a color they thought would convey the feeling they were looking to portray. Students mixed and painted radiating Tints of their chosen color around their Portraits.
This project was a Summative that conveyed each student's understanding of how to use Line, Space, Texture, Value, Color, and Proportions.

Mrs. Strub's grade 8 students have been working on The Oil Pastel Flower Inspired By Georgia O'Keeffe. The students learned about Georgia O'Keeffe's life and her widely loved works of art.
Students started this unit by creating color wheels that illustrated the primary, secondary and tertiary colors. Every color on their color wheel was made by mixing only the three primary colors.
The students then created an oil pastel technique key in their sketchbooks prior to starting their drawing of their chosen flower.
We focused on how Georgia painted her close-up flowers with the focus of bringing them to the attention of anyone that came upon them. Students practiced drawing what they actually saw when working from their reference photographs. We used bold colors and created a sense of texture by layering and blending oil pastels. Students incorporated their understanding of using the Elements of Art to create bold, eye-catching pieces.
