The systems students use to communicate non-verbally and verbally vary based on learner preference, ability, and needs. Some non-verbal ways to communicate include use of high tech Augmentative and Adaptive Communication Systems (AAC) (e.g., Dedicated Devices, and switches), or more low tech systems such as Picture Exchange Communication (PECS), American Sign Language (ASL). Below are links that will take you to resources and tools for various ways learners communicate. Though behaviorally, we want to teach learners to communicate their needs in socially appropriate ways (verses through challenging behavior). If you need more support determining which modality would be best for your learner, or feel you need more support, contact your teacher or principal to connect you to your school site Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP).
ALS is another word for modeling. Modeling language your learner is expected to use is a great way to teach them to use their equipment. This is a link shows how to support your learner in using AAC devices ranging from low tech to high tech systems of communication.
