Guitar Course Descriptions

Artist Guitar

This is the top guitar ensemble at WHS. Students work on advanced techniques, perfecting tone, sound, and musicianship. Artist Guitarists perform in five scheduled concerts throughout the year including District Guitar Assessment, and the Woodgrove Fine Arts Gala. Music performed is typically grade 3.5-5 range.

Intermediate Guitar

This guitar ensemble focuses on developing advanced techniques, improving tone and musicianship. Intermediate guitarist perform in two scheduled concerts throughout the school year.  Students are encouraged to take private lessons, and many opportunities for individual advancement are available. Music performed is typically in the 3-4 range.

Beginning Guitar

Beginning guitar focus is on note reading, chord shapes, strumming patterns, and beginning guitar technique.  This class moves very quickly! By January beginning guitarist are able to perform with the Intermediate Guitar Ensemble.  Students perform one scheduled concert in the spring.

E Major Scale - 3 Octaves (See music included in this packet) • 15 Points (out of 90) • 5 Points for correct notes • 5 Points for fluid, steady rhythm • 5 Points for tone quality (left and right hand techniques)

 Solo: Canarios by Gaspar Sanz (Included in this packet) • 35 Points (out of 90) • 10 Points for correct notes and rhythms • 10 Points for tone quality from right hand and left hand techniques • 10 Points for musicality: dynamics, phrasing, interpretation • 5 Points for overall quality of preparation

Intermediate Guitar

Instead of an audition, students will have a teacher recommendation from their prior instructor OR prior experience in a guitar ensemble setting. 

Beginning Guitar

No audition required for beginning guitar.
