Violent, heavy snowfall, with strong winds. During a snowstorm, snow practically does not fall to the ground and visibility is limited. When conditions are favorable for this, lightning may occur then it is referred to as a snowstorm.

In our country, snowstorms with lightning are most common over the sea, mainly due to the so-called lake effect, that is, the strong expansion of precipitation clouds over the water surface.It is interesting to note that the Lake effect cannot be predicted in the long term In Poland it can be found in the Sudetes, Carpathians | Bieszczady Mountains. The highest probability of snowstorms is from October to April.

Snowstorms are formed due to changes in thermodynamics and temperature gradients.
Thermodynamic wobble causes a decrease in temperature as altitude increases, leading to the formation of high-altitude Cumulonimbus clouds. These clouds are the site of lightning and snowstorms. A large pressure gradient also contributes, moving cold air masses from the western or northern part of the continent.

It is one of the most severe snowstorms recorded in the history of the United States. It occurred between March 11 and March 14, 1888 in the states of New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Snowfall ranged from 102 to 127 cm, and wind speeds reached 72km/h. Snowbanks reached 15m. More than 400 people died, including 200 in New York.
