In kindergarten, we discuss healthy eating. We learn about eating a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables as part of our health curriculum. Please send a healthy snack for your child each day, separate from his/her lunch. We eat healthy snacks at snack time and save treats for dessert at lunch. If possible, please send your child's snack in a container that can be reused, such as a washable plastic container rather than a bag. As part of our science curriculum, we discuss the three Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle and these containers can add to our understanding of reusable containers and the importance of taking care of our earth.
Healthy Snack Suggestions:
Fruit (grapes, berries, melon chunks, pineapple chunks, apple slices, banana, peaches, nectarines, pears, cherries, raisins, craisins, other dried fruits)
Vegetables (carrots, sliced cucumber, cherry tomatoes, sliced peppers, broccoli, edamame)
Pretzels, crackers, cheese, yogurt, goldfish crackers, popcorn, apple sauce, fruit cocktail cups, dry cereal, teddy grahams, fruit leather, Pirate's Booty, animal crackers
We are not able to heat food (lunch or snack) here at school and we do not provide refrigeration. If you need to keep something cold, please put an ice pack in your child's lunch box and if you need to keep something hot, insulated Thermos' work well.
Although there is always an adult to help your child, I do appreciate your consideration of child-friendly foods and containers. Items that your child can open on his/her own makes for a smoother lunch and snack time. However, we will happily help your child if needed.
Don't forget a spoon if the snack requires one. Snack is eaten in our classroom and we do not have access to utensils.
