RARE: Realizing Achievement by Recognizing Excellence

A weekly program that invites students of color in grades 4 and 5 to meet for the purpose of conducting research. Using technology, Common Core standards, and a Genius Hour model, students will generate questions, read, take notes, and create an interactive display for school-wide use. During the month of February, all classes will be invited to go on a Black History Treasure Hunt to answer questions based upon the research of the students of RARE. In this way, all students and staff will learn about this important part of America’s history. After February, the group will continue to meet to explore issues of racial identity by discussing positive role models in history and in their lives.

By creating this community of learners, it is our hope that African American students will see themselves as experts in this shared experience, learn about lesser known civil rights figures, gain a deeper understanding of the historical importance of education, and develop a positive racial identity and valuable academic skills.
