Cultural Proficiency Plan

Penn Wynne Elementary’s efforts to promote equity begins with our tradition of work in Cultural Proficiency. Highlights of our annual plan include our CP4Kids lessons, PW Colonies (our version of School Families), monthly cultural displays, A Taste of Penn Wynne (an event that celebrates our rich diversity through food and culture), and RARE; a program that promotes a positive racial and scholar identity for students of color.

CP4Kids

Grounded in the research on racial identity development in children, the staff of Penn Wynne in 2013 had created a series of lessons at each grade level based upon enduring understandings. These original lessons addressed the social justice standards of identity and diversity.

The turbulent summer of 2020 has prompted a revision of these lessons to include the antiracist work of Gladwyne elementary. These lessons will elevate CP4KIDS to the standards of justice and action. This work will continue during the 2020-21 schoolyear with the goal of all six elementary schools delivering these most important lessons of diversity, inclusion, and antiracism.

PW Colonies

In the tradition of School families, Penn Wynne has adopted the term "colonies" because Penguins live in family groups called colonies. The purpose of our colonies is to create inter grade level group bonds that continue each year as students progress from 1st through 5th grades.

A Taste of Penn Wynne

This annual event is a celebration of the diversity of our community. Families come together to share cultural heritage through food, dress and customs.

RARE

A program developed to promote positve racial identity and scholar identity for students of color in grades 4 and 5 through the study of Black history.
