ASSIGNMENT: Re-create a new drum track for a professionally recorded song.
In Music Tech 1, the majority of our time was spent only using the electronic drumset that was available to us through the piano. This time, your goal is to use either Ultrabeat or the outboard electronic drumset at the teacher station to create a drum track for one of two songs:
"Instant Crush" by Daft Punk
"The Hand That Feeds" by Nine Inch Nails
The concept of beat-making in this class is not something new, but we have not handled anything this complex before. We will be analyzing the form of this song as well as talking about songwriting techniques used to create interest in pop music.
ACCESS THE DRUMLESS SONGS HERE
Note: After downloading the file, double-click the file to decompress into a Logic Project
Download one of the drumless songs from the google drive and open it in Logic.
Listen to the song and familiarize yourself with the track
In the arrangement track, create labels for each section of the piece
Use ABC form labels in your arrangement track
If you want to use labels like Verse, Chorus, Bridge, etc., put those in the Marker track
Create a new software instrument track for your drums
If you are using Ultrabeat, switch your instrument input to Ultrabeat in the track menu
Find a sound preset that matches the style of the piece
In a blank template, build a drum beat for the first section of the piece
If you have multiple sections, you will need multiple blank templates
Drag your completed beat from Ultrabeat into the Main Arrange window
If you are using a drumset with the step editor:
Find a sound preset that matches the style of the piece
If you are using the electronic drum kit, switch your onboard instrument to be a drumset, either acoustic or electronic, that matches the style of the piece.
Record either by section or play along to the whole track
Take your recorded file from the teacher station and upload it to the project at your station (use either flash drive or google drive transfer)
Mix the drum track you created and the song so that it sounds cohesive
Before you can submit, be able to defend how you labeled your song form on your final check-in with Mr. Cooperstein
When complete, save project and submit to Schoology.
