Below you will find slides with a "groove library." These are common drum patterns played in various styles of music - rock, dance, jazz, hip-hop, etc.
Pick two grooves from the library above. You can pick any two different styles except for the basic backbeat we used in the last project 2.1.
Practice the groove with this method:
Always have a click going. In addition to the usual metronomes, you may wish to try using the backing tracks on the metronome and groove page. There are versions of each track with and without a click.
Count the rhythm for both the snare and kick drum lines.
Count and play the rhythm for both the snare and kick drum lines. Remember that your middle finger plays kick, and your index finger plays snare.
Combine your hands and practice them slower than your final tempo.
In project 2-2, you will choose 2 different grooves from the Groove Library and record them into Logic. These should not include the basic backbeat you recorded in project 2-1. All other grooves are legal and up for grabs.
Create a new project in Logic Pro X.
When prompted for a track, choose Software Instrument
Change the instrument patch. Click on Drum Kit --> Bluebird
Set a comfortable tempo for yourself. I recommend anywhere from 60 to 90 bpm.
Make sure the click is turned on, as well as the count in button. The default count in is one bar - you can change this by right-clicking the count in button and choosing the amount of bars.
Record yourself playing the first groove 4 times in a row.
Quantize your recording to the smallest subdivision.
Listen to your recording. If all of the following are true, you are ready to submit your project:
Is your subdivision in time with the click?
Are you alternating the kick and snare drums on every beat?
Did you play the pattern at least 4 times through?
If the answer is yes to all of the questions above, create a new software instrument track by doing any one of the following:
From the menu, click on Track --> New Software Instrument Track, or
Press Option-Command-S on your keyboard for a new software instrument track, or
Press Command-D to duplicate your highlighted track.
Repeat steps 6-8 for your second groove.
After you have recorded both of your grooves, save your project as 2-2 LASTNAME and upload to Schoology.
Following your submission of project 2-2, please fill out the following google form. There are no wrong answers, so feel free to be honest about your work. All self-assessments are graded based on completion.
