We're going to use the same beat maps from the last section to continue into the world of "keyboard drumming." Now we're going to learn to use your hands independently: your right hand will be playing the subdivision, and your left hand will be playing the rhythm.
Select your example(s) from the beat map examples sheet linked below.
Turn on the metronome (60 or 90 bpm - your choice)
Remember that there are metronome mp3s on the resources page, or you can use the google metronome.
Use the middle finger of your RIGHT hand to tap all of the subdivisions.
Use the middle finger of your LEFT hand to tap the rhythm written in X's below the subdivision.
Count the rhythm out loud as you tap it.
Repeat each rhythm 4 times in a row, aiming for zero mistakes.
NOTE: We will go over ALL of these instructions in class!
Download the attached Logic template for this project (see below for file link).
Copy this to your personal folder on the computer.
Double-click the file to expand the .zip file to a Logic Project file.
Change the name from 1-4 LASTNAME to your own last name (e.g. 1-4 DATSKO).
Double-click the file to open the project on your computer.
Choose your BPM for the project. The template is set to 60 bpm, but you can change to 90 if you wish. Change the tempo by clicking the tempo at the top of the screen and typing in the new tempo.
Place your LEFT hand middle finger on C1. If you press this key, you should hear the sound of the bass (also called kick) drum.
Place your RIGHT hand middle finger on the F#1 key. If you press this key, you should hear the sound of a closed hi-hat (sounds like a "tick" when played).
Select the track for the subdivision you are playing by clicking on the track header at the left of the track.
Press the R key on your keyboard to start the recording.
There will be 2 measures of a count-in before you start recording. Use this time to start playing and get your fingers in tempo.
Record the selected pattern 4 times in a row, no stopping in between.
When you finish, press the space bar to stop the recording.
Move the playhead to the beginning (either by dragging it, or by pressing the left arrow on the transport at the top of the page). Listen back to your rhythm.
If you are satisfied with your performance, mute this track by pressing the on-screen M icon in the track header.
If you are not satisfied, delete the recording and try again.
If you are satisfied, repeat steps 7-13 with the other two examples.
When finished with all three, save the file and upload to your SCHOOLOGY (use the upload function, then click on the file button to access the files on your computer).
For this project to be considered complete and receive full credit, it must meet the following minimum criteria:
Student will record three different beat maps (one each 8th, 16th, and triplet subdivision)
Each beat map must be recorded with the click
Each beat map will be accurate to the click within 90% without quantizing.
After completing the check-in, please take a minute to complete your self assessment for this project.
