The AP Art History course welcomes students into the global art world to engage with its forms and content as they research, discuss, read, and write about art, artists, art making, and responses to and interpretations of art. By investigating specific course content--250 works of art--characterized by diverse artistic traditions from prehistory to the present, the students develop in-depth, holistic understanding of the history of art from a global perspective. Students learn and apply skills of visual, contextual, and comparative analysis to engage with a variety of art forms, developing understanding of individual works and interconnections across history.

Students of all skill levels are invited to experience the dynamic world of applied art and design. In this hands-on, project-based course, students will learn the essential skills, studio habits, and techniques artists use to plan and produce works of art through illustration, bookmaking, color theory, painting, printmaking, sculpture, decorative arts, textiles, mixed media, and more. Draw, paint, sculpt, design, print, and stitch your ideas into life! Creative thinking and craftsmanship will be emphasized, along with essential art elements and design principles. This course serves as a prerequisite for advanced fine art courses: Drawing & Painting and Sculpture.

Students will learn an introduction to the stage and what it means to be an actor. We learn through experience, and in this course students will understand and experience the poetry of trust, improvisation, motivation and purpose, sensory awareness, movement and physical involvement, verbal agility as well as fundamentals of the stage. Students will learn the actors’ warm-up, be exposed to theater games, and explore ways of understanding text and creating characters. To continue to Advanced Theater, student must earn a C in Intro and perform an audition.

This collaborative yearlong intro class will give you a running start developing the portfolio required by college and industry applications. Increase your understanding of media messages as you learn the basic technical and aesthetic elements of film and television production. The course requires analysis and production of various video genres. In addition, students study story construction, learn visual storytelling techniques, and produce short narrative films. Students will also learn editing techniques using Adobe Premiere. The finished productions may be shown at school screenings and entered in film festivals.

Productions are posted on the VTV YouTube channel. VTV segments and other videos produced in this class can be entered in local film festivals.

This elective course is open to students who are interested in learning guitar. Students MUST furnish their own ACOUSTIC guitar for the class. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY and this class has a VERY supportive environment, however, THIS IS A PERFORMANCE CLASS and those "in class" performances (AND the evening open mic concert) ARE A REQUISITE for enrollment. The emphasis in this class is on gaining the skills necessary to cover popular songs of your choosing. Students will learn chords, rhythms, vocal technique (use of your voice is required), and by the end of the course should be able to hold their own performing at least one tune at any open mic.

This elective course requires previous study of an instrument of the band or willingness to study privately with an instructor. This is a performance based class and progress towards proficient performance standards is a requisite for this class. Students must meet proficient standards in both theory and performance in order to continue in successive semesters. Music representing different styles and periods of history is learned and performed. Members are required to perform and march at all football and basketball games on the pep schedule as well as assigned parades, contests, competitions, and public performances. Uniform consists of black pants, black socks, black shoes, white button down dress shirt, black tie. (Ladies may wear a black dress so long as its hem falls below the knee when seated and is deemed appropriate).

Jazz Band is LSHS’s award winning “touring” ensemble. Students perform “Big Band Jazz” in styles ranging from the 1940’s to present day including swing, rock, fusion, and modern. Auditions are held within the first two weeks of school. Jazz Ensemble members will be required to perform at all concerts, contests, and other outside of school performances. Weekly sectionals are mandatory. A tuxedo is required for this ensemble.

A non-auditioned vocal class designed as a high school entry-level performance class, Lyric choir is offered to Soprano/Alto voice part students with a desire to sing and have fun. Course content includes the study and performance of four part choral music. This choir will perform music from all different periods as well as all different styles such as jazz, blues, pop and classical. Students learn skills including note reading, ear training, vocal technique, musical vocabulary, musical phrasing, and performance in varied styles. The ensemble performs at several concerts, festivals, contests and community events throughout the school year.

The most experienced and knowledgeable SATB students audition for placement into this group, while concurrently enrolled in either Acapella Choir or Chamber Choir. This course also will register a rhythm section with instrumentalists playing Piano, Bass, Drums and/or Jazz Guitar. This course will explore music of many styles ranging from the earliest music on record all the way through the present day. We begin in 1400 B.C. and move quickly to modern classical music similar to what is seen in Fantasia. We then go back to 1900 and listen to the history of Jazz through the modern day. To finish the class we go back to 1950 and study the history of Rock and Roll into the modern day. We will spend a great deal of time listening to and discussing the music, its style, and how it has come to be. Other than the listening tests, this class’ tests are open note. Students will learn about structure, language, and instrumentation.

AP Music Theory is designed for those who need it for career study as well as those who desire it for enrichment or academic rigor. The main emphasis is placed on music of the Common Practice Period (1600-1900) and focus is on preparation for the AP Test. It will be offered exclusively to seniors who meet the prerequisite requirements. Enrollment may be granted to students who have not been continuously enrolled in our instrumental music programs on a case-by-case basis with demonstration of equivalent skills or exceptional ability at the discretion of the director.
