Le français

'A different language is a different vision of life.'

Federico Fellini

Languages create adventures!

That's why we teach French at Little Ealing.

At Little Ealing we want children to become curious about languages, and be inspired to go on learning and gaining confidence throughout life. It's not only about speaking and understanding, the joy is also in making connections between the language they're learning and the language they already know. There are lots of useful words and phrases for the children to learn, even at this early stage, but most of all they'll develop the positive attitude that says, 'Yes, I can do it!'

Through learning a language children develop a greater understanding of their own lives in the context of exploring the lives of others. They learn to look at things from another's perspective, giving them insight into the people, culture and traditions of other countries. Lessons learned in language classes are some of the most fundamental to being a citizen.

International Day at LEPS

Bringing our diverse, multi-cultural and multi-lingual school community together - International Day is celebrated in the second half of the summer term.

Children from Reception to Year 6 take part in a range of activities linked to different countries. They are also encouraged to dress up to reflect their cultural heritage and many parents or relatives volunteer their time to read a story from their own culture or in their home language to their child’s class and year group.

Choosing French names in Year 1

From Year 1 to Year 6, all children have one specialist French lesson per week in the French classroom. Reception have a French lesson once every third week in their own classroom. For details on the curriculum covered and relevant resources, see Year groups links above.

In addition, Mme Woolley runs French Ambassadors, a weekly French club for children who want to practise speaking in French, sing songs, do some writing and hopefully have fun too.

Details of when the club will be running next year will be sent out towards the end of the summer term.

Active Gesture Led Approach

I hear and I forget.

I see and I remember.

I do and I understand.

(CHINESE PROVERB)

At Little Ealing we use gestures in French to improve recall and fluency. We have fun too.
