PSAT (Preliminary SAT)

The PSAT (Preliminary SAT) sponsored by The College Board will be administered at Longview High School during the school day on the following dates for the following grades beginning at 8:00 AM.  Please read below.  Students will be assigned and notified of their testing location.

Longview High School will offer The College Board's PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test during the testing window as allowed by The College Board.

Any 9th or 10th graders who want to take the PSAT will test on October 1 and 2 and during the week of October 7 depending on the number of students who register.  The PSAT does not count for 9th and 10th grade students; however, LHS encourages college bound 9th and 10th graders to take the PSAT so that they know what to expect their junior year when the PSAT does count.   Students also receive valuable information about their academic strengths and weaknesses with their score report so they can then prepare for the real SAT and/or ACT for college admission.   Cost of the test is $20.   Registration forms will be available in the College and Career Center beginning the first day of classes;  English teachers also have the forms for students  Students will return the forms to the center and pay by cash or check in the College and Career Center.  Cost of the PSAT is $20.00.  See Mrs. Ray if you have questions.

Juniors will take the PSAT during the week of October 7=10, 2024.  Juniors across the nation take the PSAT to compete for recognition as National Merit Scholars, Commended Scholars, National Hispanic Scholars, National African-American Scholars, and National Indigenous People Scholars.  The PSAT is the first step on a student's road to college.  Students also receive valuable information about their academic strengths and weaknesses with their score report so they can then prepare for the real SAT and/or ACT for college admission. Registration information was available to students at LHS registration, and many registered and paid then.  Registration forms will be available in the College and Career Center beginning Monday, August 15.  Students will return the forms to the center and pay by cash or check to Mrs. Houston in the College and Career Center.  Cost of the PSAT IS $20.00  See Mrs. Ray if you have questions.

Juniors should take the PSAT as this test is the first test in National Merit Scholarship competition to be named a National Merit Scholar or Commended Scholar.

If you would like more information on the scholarship competition, visit The College Board’s website at www.collegeboard.com.

Sophomores are encouraged to take the PSAT even though the score does not count until the junior year.  However, sophomores can gain valuable academic information from taking the test and experience what a college entrance examination will be like.  Longview High School will invite all sophomores (rising juniors) to attend the Lobo Scholars Academy to be offered in June 2025 to prepare in earnest for the 2025 PSAT.   Freshmen are welcome to take the PSAT, but their score also will not count.

Taking the PSAT will definitely help students recognize their academic strengths and weaknesses so that they can prepare adequately for the real SAT and college admission.  (Students should take the real SAT and/or ACT during the spring semester of their junior year to be ready to apply to college beginning in the mid-summer before their senior year or early fall of their senior year.)

If you have questions about the PSAT, see Mrs. Ray in the College and Career Center on the second floor of the main building on Mondays and Wednesdays or Mrs. Houston in the College and Career Center, Monday through Friday.  903-663-7129. gray@lisd.org
